Default Parrot AR.Drone - Fly w/your iPhone

Ithought those of us in the RC community might get a kick out of the latest gadget to come to market from the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas:

Parrot AR.Drone

Granted, I'm not a big fan of the product (it's going for $500) but if you've got some money to burn - it's a pretty cool little toy. Enjoy All.....

I guess someone who would spend $300 for a phone might spend $500 on this. I'm sure the voyeur's are just chomping at the bit for this though.

In the videos it looks amazingly stable.

The Web site states that it has an on board computer that is effectively controlling the quadcopter.

It seems like this is more of a "fly by wire" craft, than an RC one.

That depends opjose. If RC means "raidio control" to you then yes. If it means "remote control" then RC applies

I will begin flying mine next week (Sweden). It was possible to leapfrog the Parrot country rolloutplansby ordering the drone from a Hong Kong Ebay seller.
I will do fun stuff hooking up a GoPro HD Hero sportscam (5 Mpixel cam / 1080p HD movie camera) to it and do nice movie clips and interval photo recordings.
The drone is limited to 6 metres height by its ultrasonic height sensor and otherwise by the iPhone Wifi reach.

I´m mostly interested in it as a mobile app developer due to its public SDK.

A recent review here

Just got the Parrot A R Drone running on a laptop with a real flight sim radio hooked up to control the flight. No need to run the I-phone app. Only trouble I have is the z axis stick is backwards. Nice set up

I have one, it gets quite a bit of attention at the field, everyone thinks it's a hoot

The negatives are going to be simply that it's a toy. It has no range to speak of and so won't be suitable for FPV or any serious aerial video or photography. As toys go, it's really expensive. I saw one today at Barnes and Nobel priced at $300. For that much money, I could put together a nice quadcopter to control with my RC transmitter that could fly as far out as I'd ever want it to and could do flips and rolls and such if I chose. It could also carry more weight for FPV and such if I wanted to do that. I see the AR Drone as a tech toy for the Iphone crowd, not a serious RC vehicle.

Thanks for your input. I think you might have changed my mind. There's a Top Flight B-25 partially set up.for $550.00. Might be better putting the bucks towards that. I think I might do that. Thanks Again...... Jeff
