Default cleaning engines

Does anyone think there would be a problem with using non-chlorinated brake clean to clean an engine? my main concern would be gaskets or orings.

Thanks in advance</p>

I use Brakekleen regularly on model engines and have not had any o ring or gasket problems. Since the product is designed to be used on brake systems, which contain seals, gaskets, and o rings that are likely made of the same materials used in model engines, I'd be surprised if there was an issue. Anything that can stand up to nitormethane, alcohol, and burning oils in RC fuels is, IMO, unlikely to be damaged by Brakekleen

After switching to Cool Power, I only clean my engines when I'm transferring a used one to a new plane.

Prior to that, only when I had reason to pull the engine from the plane for maintenance or changes.

Pretty much never! If I have an engine pulled I may use some alcohol and a paint brush to remove some of the dirt or grit off of them? I fly off of a dry lake bed so there is usually some dirt on them. That's about it. Why people worry about baked on castor on there mufflers or engine is beyond me, it's just the nature of the beast. When I was rebuilding a lot of engines and had enough old engines to make it worth doing I did crock pot a few, no real reason but some people like nice new looking engines?

Ive had 3 specific engines for about 2-3 years now. Ive never cleaned any of them. They are still pretty clean. I have one which was just pulled from a plane I sold and might go into storage. If its does, I might use Dawn power dissolver and a brush, and clean it up prior to putting it away.

I clean them good when ever they have to be pulled for any reason. Other than that I just wipe them good after flying. Like they say, "you never see a dirty engine on an Indy race car."

You mean after run oil, nope, never. If you do a search there are several links talking about it. I only have a problem with old hardened castor with engines I have left under the bench for a very long time, sometimes years. If I had ran them dry after use they always seem to be OK, if the engine/plane was in a crash or something then they tend to be hardened up and I use a heat gun to loosen them up then just fire them up and use them. RUST!! I have never had a rust problem either. I think that is because of the climates I have lived in, almost no humidity. If I lived in the mid west and I wasn't going to use my engines for a long period of time I think I would run them dry and use some after run oil but it's hard to get the stuff into the bearings where you need it. It doesn't hurt anything to use it so if you would feel better using it give it a try. Just type in After Run Oil and see what people think about it.
