Damn near missed my flight this morning. As it is, they held the plane for me, so I got on, but my bag might not have made it

Im not trying to drive the conversation another way but sence it does have to do with tracking Ifeel its kind of relivant. Lets assume your out flying your plane and you endup taaking it over a wooded area or maybe a corn field and the worst thing happens....The engine gives or something else causes the plane to go down. You look and look and look and maybe even get a team of people to look but you still cant find your plane. You know aliens didnt take it. is there some sort of device or technology that would allow you to easily locate your plane in the event you crash it and can not find it?

Well, there is a beeping locator that is available somewhere. I've read about it here on RCU.. makes a beeping sound so you can "track in" on it.

I'm sure that someone has some sort of telemetry for this sort of thing, but it may be a bit cost prohibitive for an average modeler.

Just don't fly it over the trees and you'll be all set!!

Minn: On my most recent trip to Juneau, AK, I was in the FAA's Global 5000. I had my Garmin GPS on the window (suction cup gizmo) and was tracking our progress. Pretty neat. On the return trip, we got up to 628 Mph, about 545 knots at 41,000 feet.

No wifi, though.. [&o]

Or maybe have it explode or hook up a smoke grenade to it to go off when it does crash...lol Well I will look into the beeper I think I know what your talking about, kind the same concept that's used for tracking tagged bears and such right?

Yes there are several devices and technologies in the market for this.

The simplest and least expensive, is a loud buzzer that goes off when you turn off your TX or the plane looses reception.

If the plane is buried in the bush, the audio permits you to locate it, but you must be within hearing range.

More sophisticated systems are also availlable.

One uses a radio direction finder and a small plane mounted transmitter.

These have a range of up to 1-2 miles at best.

Surpassing that are systems where the plane reports it's GPS position via cellular networks... much like having a GPS enabled cell phone within the plane that is constantly reporting it's position.

Such devices pinpoint a plane almost instantly and act to record flight movements.

If I recall correctly I believe Eagle-Tree has such a device.

Twice what they're paying you! Ha! that can't be all that bad!! How about twice of what you make in a year, then maybe. I'll be on a plane in an hour of you can swing that.

You should check out their "Squawks" in the Squawks and Headlines tab. They always have something neat on there.

Flightaware is really great. They have made some fantastic upgrades to the site since I started frequanting the site 2 - 3 years ago.

Fun stuff!
