Wing tip modification for trainer?

My Feedback: (1)
Hi Gang,
Before I cover this wing I built up I was thinking of removing the sharp cut on the tips and feather down both the top and bottom of the wing tips then sort of round them off.
I'm also going to reduce the dihedral to that lower then that of an Avistar.
Just enough to notice.
Just looking at the stock version of the wing tips I see a lot of drag.
However i'm open to suggestions.

The "wedge" type wing tips are there for a reason. They add to the dihedral effect and give you a little more lift for the same airspeed.
Wing tips design is much more important than most people think. Being as this is a small trainer, it's really not THAT important though.
If you want to glue on another block or modify the one on there (which is built up on most trainers) go ahead and do it. I really like rounded off wing tips, but covering them is the biggest pain in the world!

On a trainer, I don't think you're going to notice much, if any, difference in the air from the wing tip change. I agree that some wingtips can make a signifigante difference for some planes, but in your case, whatever you want to do will likely be just fine.

I think I will do that.
I was reading another thread on dihedral and he received a lot of positive replys.
I remember last year when I posted I was going to change the dihedral, the post was removed and I was told that I was encouraging others to make a trainer unsafe to fly
I think making changes like this only adds to the hobby.

I really like to build up a CUB from scratch but I just always seem to have to many things going at one time so doing some mods like this gives me a little satisifaction

Gotta love that...
You can use anhedral on a trainer with no negative effects... Just sort of defeats the purpose in having a trainer if you're going to make the changes.

I guess I'll be the voice of dissent here. I think that wing tip design is much LESS important than most people think. Winglets can reduce induced drag a little bit for some planes, if properly designed. Beyond that, I don't think anything you do with the wing tip design will give you a noticeable benefit. If you want to modify the tips for aesthetic reasons, or for the heck of it, go for it. Generally, I don't think you will see an aerodynamic benefit.
