Some caught my Irvine Tutor 40's tail, whilst on the ground. The rudder's OK, but the tail itself needs some repair.
I'm OK with sorting out the damage to the Balsa, but will need to recover it. What sort of covering should I use, and how you you apply it ?
It's too bad for a patch, so I'll need to recover the entire tail.
Thanks

I've found Carl Goldburg UltraCote to be the easiest to apply.
Basically, the only tool you will need is a sealing iron (about $20).
Cut out a piece of covering that overhangs the edge of the surface by about 2 inches. Crank up that sealing iron and "tack" the covering on all 4 corners of the surface. Then go around the edge of the surface while pushing the bubbles out.
When finished, you should have a fin with covering adhered along all the edges.
Next, go along the edges with your iron and wrap the covering around. Cut off any excess.
Now, turn the iron's heat up to maximum and wave it over the wrinkles at under 1/2 inch from the fin.
I hope my instructions have given you at least a fuzzy idea of what to do

Ultracote is now owned by Hangar 9.
