i just turned 40 this year and have my first trainer an old rcm 40 size am i too old to start fresh at this? have 2 young sons id love to get into it :confused: have 2 great r/c flying fields nearby and a good friend thats a pro builder and corsair pro pilot, so i have a trainer near as well as builder for help let me know what you guys think

I was about your age when I started. My son was 10 at the time. We had a ball flying together, even competed in Pattern for a few years. Then he found tennis and girls. Enjoy it while you can.

He is now 35, a Captain in the Air Force, and we still enjoy flying when he comes to visit.

RC modeling is a terrific hobby. Almost all of the people I have met through my involvement in it are super. I have many life-long friends I have made while enjoying the sport.

I was 37 when I started, never considered being to old although I wish I had started earlier. Look at all the fun I was missing.

seen it happen time and time again, In fact I watched our youngest solo 5 years old , fly rings around his dad the other day, they have no fear !!

WoW....Here I am at 52, started at 51 (last year). The thought of was I too old never crossed my mind. There are enough different types of aircraft, styles, and engine sizes that you will find will fit your budget and desires. GO FOR IT! And remember, when you turn 52, you will be 12 years furhter than I was.

I started in the hobby 3 years ago when I was 39. I wished I started sooner. I feel I missed out on at least 20 years of fun. But now it's only worth looking forward - better late than never. Your sons won't have to feel that way. They have a Dad that will have gotten them their start in RC. I have a young son that I am looking forward to sharing the hobby with. (As long as he takes and keeps an interest in it. 'don't want to force it on him.) It should be a great father/son hobby. (Yes, daughters too.) So go for it, and don't worry about how old you are. It's not the years, it's the mileage.

You have already started, you just don't realize it yet!

I jumped in back at the beginning of this year, and like others out here I wish that I had found the hobby back when I was a kid. I had been around some friends who had planes, and was highly interested back then, just never stepped forward to get involved.

From our other conversations, I'd say you are on the right track, no doubt. While I don't have a wealth of knowledge to offer, if you need anything please feel free to PM me and we can explore the answers at the same time.

I too have 3 children, girls in fact. If they take an interest in R/C planes I'll be one happy father, however Barbie continues to win the race at the moment. Maybe my next plane will have room in the cabin for the "Patty Wagstaff Barbie"?

I'm 38 and just starting out myself, and to be honest, I couldn't have afforded to get into this hobby at any earlier an age. I was to busy spending my money on cars and girls in my teens and early twenties and paying for children, bills, and mortgage in my late twenties and early thirties, so never had the extra money to start. Glad that's finally changed, and like yourself hope to get my kids into the hobby as well, and maybe get the wife of my back about how much I spend, wishful thinking on my part I'm sure.

I am just getting back into RC after a 40 year layoff.
I am 65 and just ordered a Superstar trainer.
When I used to fly 40 yrs ago you had one button on the radio
and the servos were called escapments and powered with rubber bands.
You pushed the button once for left and twice for right and three times for up and 4 times for down and it was hell to pay when you forgot where you were in the button pushing sequence.
I think I will have more fun this time as the equipment is better and they have a buddy box and people to help you get started.
I think 1/2 of the guys at our club are in there 60s.

Is 40 old?, no way, I'm also 40 and I'm getting back to the hobby after a 20 year layoff, I also got into riding dirt bikes :eek: at my age, maybe a stupid move, but I'm having fun.

At our field there is no age issue. I'm 46. Started last year. I too wish I had started earlier. I've made some great friends. I really look forward to the weekend morning breakfast at the diner.

Expense?
Sure, I've spent a few bucks. But I can remember spending just as much for a day of fishing.
It can be expensive if you let it. Get a veteran to help you. I haven't found anyone who can fly, who doesn't drop what he's doing to help another flier, or potential flier. Once you're into it, you'll probably find a few next plane bargains in your own club membership. I've seen several of the veterans offer bargains to a local member who will enjoy the plane. But they won't offer it to the guy who buys a plane a week because he can afford it. If someone wants to play, a plane will show up. It might need a little TLC, but the guys will also help you get it back in the air.

Get involved in the club.
There's always someting that you can help with. It's great to share with your kids. My boys have no interest in flying, but the enjoy going to the meetings and hearing the stories.

I go on and on, but damn, this is fun.

Im 41 and just started last month. I am having a ball!! Just took the ole Superstar up 4 times tonite. Started my high speed landing approaches to ensure I could keep the middle of the runway. IT was nice to see the plane crossing close in front of me. Usually I have more air for figure 8 patterns.

I'm 44 started 10 years ago and stopped after about 1/2 season, the LHS (at the time) opened a field because they were interested in selling planes and thats all, they didnt give a s*&t if you could fly or not and the promised training lasted about 20 minutes.....now 10 years later, you can start with a park flyer at a schoolyard. and be able to learn on a stick for under $200 thats the route I recommend...then you can transfer those skills to glow models .. I would recommend also that you start with a good radio ...either for future use or future sale in the unlikely event you dont enjoy the hobby..remember you cant fly the cool looking planes yet, but you should be old enough to know that ;)
and just be a 15 year old trapped in a 40+ year old body like the rest of us :p ....Rog
