Looks like it is the Pack and your Steelers. A lot of people predicted that outcome. As a former Wisconsinite I still have green/gold in my blood. Should be a really good game. Since I will be in the Wildwood area of your state on Superbowl sunday will need to find a TV to watch.

The snow on my deck basically came down since last Thursday. Weather reported light snow flurries. Oh well only 2 more months. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...ades_smile.gif

Looks like we might have a decent flying day Tomorrow Mid 50's with calm wind. Have to bust out my stick. Looks like it's going to rain like hell on Wednesday here though. Whats that white stuff?

Well it's 36 degrees warmer this morning , than it was yesterday morning. Somethings wrong when 13 above feels good.

It's 39 as I write this here in West Tennessee. Headed to the field in about an hour, should be an OK day with slight chance of rain.

Hi guys,

Here is a great post about winter flying. Some good tips and equipment suggestions.

http://www.jotto.no/heliwinter/

-28 here this morning in Vermont. Been years since we've seen that low a temp. -5 to -10 is common but this is ridiculous. Oh, and to top that off, my power went out at 3:30am and just came back on at 8. I was starting to freak out measuring water pipe temps with my IR temp meter and most of them were at 32deg. Had to run out and get my propane tank refilled and my Mr Buddy heater fired up in the basement to try to keep the pipes from freezing. Everything's fine at this point but it's getting old....

Oh, and a Prius will start at -28 no problem. It will make some weird noises, but it WILL start ;-)

Whew ! Steve, thats cutting it close. I keep a kerosine stove for back up here. Power companys are really good here, not much slows the line guys down. Pretty tuff bunch.
Suppose to get to 28 today and flurries, plus we are adding 2 minutes a day of daylght . When all this starts melting, it;s going to be a mess. They are already getting the pumps and flood stuff ready for a bad flood season. Now if it warms real fast and the ground doesn't have time to thaw everyone south of me might want to seek highter ground..

I went for the Kero stove first, but the damn thing (for the first time of course) started smoking like hell and wouldn't fire up correctly for some reason. One more project to put on my list eh? I know what you mean about melting. If you get a big temp swing with all this snow and ice on the ground (and the roof) it can get ugly pretty quick. At least I'm on high ground...

I realize there arecolder places here and there but we had -20 this AM. Too cold for this old guy. A buddy of mine that I used to fly with inone of the Navy squadrons on Guam, Super Connies, is in Bath, ME had -11. Must have been a heat wave for him. Go Packers.

Yea, as depressed as the real estate is down here the wife just might talk me into buying a small place for the winter months!

This sure beats freezing - which I get to go back to in 3 days.

But I'll be back in Florida at least two more times before spring!

To the guys that live in upstate NY, Rome and Richfield Springs, I feel your pain. I went to Colgate and those were the coldest 4 winters I ever knew!!!

Thanks rfg. I think I can speak for both of us in that we need all the concern that we can get. However, it's all the way up to 14 now. Yep, with a + in front of it. :)

I'm trying to avoid feeling pain...only went out to get the mail...that was long enough.
It got up to 10 here...(yeah, that's above zero.. :D) and back down to about 6 right now.

Supposed to be in the 30's tomorrow (with rain ) and Wednesday...just a wee bit of fluctuation there, aye!? I'll believe it when I see it.

Can you guys put skis on your models and fly them?
I hope it's not a stupid question, but Florida is the coldest place I have lived. I am from the Caribbean.
I am thinking if people up north can find ice fishing fun, I assume you may have fun flying in the snow using skis.

I use floats on my planes...and I also have a flying boat...I find that they work better than skis, on softer snow.
It's a matter of personal preferance though...some guys prefer skis.

It's been so cold and windy lately though, that my friends and I are just staying inside and building.

This is also what can be called "building season"...time to get some new planes ready for Spring and Summer. I'm working on a kit of the .60 size Ultra Sport right now...in between "RCU breaks":D

Snow even wheels can be used in the right circumstance. If it rains on top of snow and freezes the snow becomes like concrete smooth and fast. Skis also work excellent in those conditions. Most of the time in winter I fly my small hand launch planes. That way I don't even have to worry about the take off. Just land normally and watch the snow fly. Then just put it in the car to keep it somewhat warm to recharge the battery and go again. I did that a lot when I was younger.

Now that I am older and my arthritis really flares bad in the cold I prefer to build and ready the fleet for the next season. Looking forward to flying my new 72 inch gas powered Corsair in April or May when the weather is better for breaking in engines and test flying without gloves here in MI.

Depending on the type of snow. If it is lite and fluffy, then floats work better. If it is hard pack, then ski's work better. If it is in the 20 or 30's then it is lots of fun.

G'day

Well down here in Oz it is 36 degrees Celsius (just under 100F) today and will be 42 tomorrow (just over 100). So today I went out to do some test flying. A new member has built a Kadet Senior with Saito 62 for noise. Sadly he managed to get the nose wheel hooked up backwards and that needs to be fixed before we fly. The engine had some more running and is now ready for the air set a little rich.

I flew my Hanger 9 Piper Pawnee with its OS 81 Alpha on a 14 x 6 prop. It took off on about half power and flies really nicely. I did not use full power at all during the flight. I think I will be flying it more often.

Cheers

Mike in Oz (where it is warm.)

Very tempting, but looking in the Lake of the Ozarks. Something on a nice big secluded bay, nice boat launch, and a way cool flying club close by. I can knock 4 months off of winter just going that far south. Not to mention the cost of living and taxes in Minnesota are getting way out of line.

Come on down ,, we fly at the lake every Sunday and Wednesday. Some fly more than that! We have a great club in Eldon, MO. LORCS
http://lorcs.com/ There are 3 clubs in the lake area but ours is the best! http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...wink_smile.gif
