I know this is probably not the right place for this but its in my favorite list. Move it if you need to.

WHEN FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS RC IS THE WIND GOING TO SLOW DOWN !!

Today was about the same as the last week and there are no signs of it letting up. Steady 20+ with these gusts every 45 seconds. One of the 43's in the top right corner is over our field.

Same situation down here in Lawton. And it's not looking very good any time soon to get some flying in!!! [:o]</p>

I am starting to go bonkers.

Sorry you are getting hit as well.

It looks like all of us in OK are just going to have to wait it out. There is normally a day or two a week with 15mph winds or less. I have out of necessity learned to handle and enjoy a good wind here in OK but SHEESH ! This is getting silly.

It is that time of year for a lot of the country unfortunately.

I believe this is what they call "building season" here in the Southwest.

Tomorrow we have a forecast of 60mph with heavy gusts. Then we have a cold front moving in with rain and wind. Our swap meet was moved from Sat. to Sunday in hopes of everyone getting in some stick time. It is just our normal spring time weather. Last Friday it was 90 with zero wind and I got a bit sun burnt. Not this week!!

PhoenixAngel is due west of me and RCKen is southwest of me, neither of them very far. Don't you guys think if they had any honor at all, they would bottle up some of that wind and keep it in Oklahoma before it had a chance to keep us poor guys in Arkansas from getting it? We normally fly on Sunday and Wedensday. Last Sunday it was 89 degrees and sunny. Today was 75 degrees and sunny, but could we fly? NOOOO. We had wind that should rightly have stayed in Oklahoma. That is, if those guys in Oklahoma were doing the right thing.

Same here in the Deep South. :(  We had rain for almost two whole weeks and now we've had pretty rough wind for almost two weeks.  Well, except for that monster buster that came through here the other night!  LOL  Luckily I'm still working on taxes so I haven't been able to fly anyway or I would be as aggravated as you guys.  [:@]

My cut off for wind is about 30. If it's blowing ing the 20's, I'm heading out with a gas Ultra Stick and a park zone p-47. In 30 mph wind, you land at your feet like a heli :D

phoemixangel, i feel for you, this weather is atrocius. I haven't been able to fly since last november. Flood rains week after week, and gale force winds every week , We need someone to blame for all this , so lets pick on RCKen. He feels like he is being generous by shareing it all with us, but please Ken ,,,, turn it off , we have had enough.

{We can blame him because he is the boss }

It's called Spring Brother, I feel your pain. You think that's bad, my Club is only a mile away from Lake Ontario and the wind most always comes from the lake in a NE direction. I think we have maybe a month all together with no wind, if we're lucky all summer long. I usually fly late in the evening or early in the morning to avoid the winds.

get yourself a Stick. Best high wind airplane. I would fly it in nearly any wind unless it was so windy I couldn't taxi without rolling over.

I have several SPADs that I don't mind flying in high winds.... lots of fun with no risk. I don't really care how hard it's blowing as long as it's pretty directional. Those 30mph gusts that whip from all different directions keep you on your toes! http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/biggrin.gif

20-30mph wind is one thing, but this has been the worst year for gusty wind I can recall. I don't have my April flight in for all season flyer yet. And if it's gonna blow, blow in a rain.

The same in Ky. If we have light winds it's cold or raining. when it warms up we're getting 20mph or higher winds out of the south. Our runway is W to E Dennis

Sure, you guys laughed at us all winter while we were snowed in, but right now, the sun is shining, there's not a cloud in the sky, it's 55 degrees and it's nice and calm [8D]

After 15mph, thats my limit ! Ive learned my leason trying to fly in 20+mph winds. I dont enjoy fighting the winds trying to fly or the epxensive cost of repairs fom it.

Scooter, you flying today?????:) I quit flying when I can't taxi my plane back into the pits. That seems to be about 15 to 20 mph. If I see the weather report showing 10 to 15 I don't bother going out. It's a long way to drive just to fight the gusting. If I'm already there I stay and fly but a 60 mile round trip is a bit far to go just to fly in the gusts.

TexasAirBoss 04-07-2011 10:40 AM

RE: WIND,WIND,WIND

I fly at two clubs in Houston. One club has obstacles near the runway . The airmass flowing over the runway is very trubulent at times depending on the direction of the wind and wether those obstacles have created turbulance affecting the runway . Flying there with winds near 15 mph can be very challenging.

The other club has no obstacles near its runway. The airmass flowing over the runway remains smooth, (or laminar). Flying in winds up to 30 mph are common at this field. Those winds seem to be only minor. In fact, they feel nice and refreshing.

When people say that the airplane doesn't know that it is in a moving airmass they are essentially correct. Once you climb above the height of the low level turbulance created by obstacles, the airmass is generally laminar, unless an immediate phenonenom such as a storm or front is creating turbulence.

Of the two clubs that I belong to, the one with the poorest characteristics and the worse obstacle generated turbulence is by far the larger club. It has over 100 members and has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars purchasing land and building facilities. The other club has only 24 people in it. But it is far superior because of the topography. Surveying a possible flying site for obstacles and then testing the site prior to commiting to a land purchase or rental agreement is essential. Not all sites are created equal. Some are great for flying in the wind and some are not.

The wind typically calms in late May. April and early may are usually windy. Then by mid September the days are too short to fly after work. That's the problem with this hobby in the Northeast. Flying season is about 4 months long.

Yeah at the point you can't even keep it on the ground with the nose pointed into the wind, it's time to call it quits.

With a heavier plane the bar can be raised a bit...

I have found that being on top of a hill makes a difference. My house is at a lower elevation and the winds don't seem so bad. Once I get to the field, which is located near the top of a hill, it's almost always more windy. Very frustrating!

I use weather bug. I look at one location first and see what it's doing at one spot then I go to another location south of the first station and check that out too. We are sort of able to get a true picture of what is going on at the field before we drive out there. Here at home it's hard to gauge what is going on. Where I'm at right now the wind gauge is showing gusts over 60 mph but the close weather station by the field is only showing 18 mph. I was just out driving and it was hard to hold the van in it's lane at different places. Where the stations install there gauge is also a factor. The stations are usually schools so they may not have them mounted on a roof. The dust right now is so thick you can't see the mountains. When I got out of the van the wind tried to kick my legs out from under me when I walked. That would be a bit stronger then the weather site is showing. If it's hard to drive my van out to the field then I don't want to fly in this wind. I have done it just to proove it can be done but there is a point when flying is no longer fun. Having the dirt from the lake bed sand blasting your glasses isn't fun.

Same story out here in CO. We got blown off the beach at our weekly float fly 12 days ago after only 2-3 of us got in flites. Hasn't stopped since with a 92mph zephyr hitting my home town last night.

Did manage to get in 2 flites early this AM before........the WIND!

I have a GP Big Stik .60, I like flying in the wind. I am usually the only one out at our club in the wind. I am comfy in higher wind when it is steady-ish, but I am just not going to fight this mess.

I LIKE having a GP Big Stik. I am not that good at flying, if I tried in this I would likely come home with a bag of Great Planes Big Stik Edition toothpicks, glow fuel flavor. :D

"The Airplane Doesn't Know It's Windy!"

This is true but when you are 12" off the ground and the wind goes from 25 mph to 10 mph, the ground comes up in a hurry.

WestCoastFlyer 04-07-2011 04:21 PM

RE: WIND,WIND,WIND

20 MPH is a hefty smack. When the wind gets serious and gets your attention, that's 20 MPH. 20 is my max, but I like flying in the wind. I use weather bug all the time. There are a lot of stations in my area and it's a great way to see what's going on. Here in the Pacific Northwest April through mid summer the wind comes up like clockwork every afternoon, usually 5 - 10 MPH.

I only fly sport planes in the wind. My favorite two planes for the wind are my SPAD Coyote and MUS. They wind can get ya. I lost a little 3D airplane when the wind threw it into the ground a couple years ago and destroyed it. Flying a Cub in the wind can be like it's a yo-yo violently yanked up and down. Sticks are the best in the wind in my experience, they don't get buffeted up and down as much as other designs.
