Ouch! I feel your pain. I badly cut my thumb 12 years ago. Not quite that bad. I have fifteen stitches and nicked the end of the bone. Good luck to you.

izzy-israel-73 10-01-2013 12:48 PM

been aweek since had the surgery flying again amazing what surgeons can do to get you back on your thumbs ;)

Villa 10-06-2013 05:09 AM

Hi izzy-israel-73
That is a horrible cut. We all seem to have to go thru the same pain and experience. I see people reach over the engine to remove the glow plug driver while the engine is running. I always walk around the plane and remove it from the back of the plane. Also, we have 7 Engine Starting Safety Stands at our field. That is a tremendous safety feature.

DavidAgar 10-06-2013 05:11 PM

This is a good reminder for all that fly. Be careful what you are doing around spinning props. Hope you get better soon, Dave

combatpigg 10-06-2013 06:58 PM

Choreograph all your movements around the engine to a set routine that you never deviate from ahead of time.
Never be in a hurry to do anything.
Have a well rehearsed engine kill worked out and treat every engine like it will fire up at WOT every time.

carl24bpool 10-07-2013 02:59 AM

Ouch. I did one similar when I was 16 but it cut my finger the other way, down the middle, straight through the nail and took the end of the bone off. Also had a few other lacerations to other fingers. That was at WOT though. Its a nasty reminder of what they can do to you.

jetmech05 10-08-2013 04:59 PM

You're not alone I got 3 fingers on my right hand back in 07. Mine was through the bone on 2 fingers.
heal quickly

Hi izzy-israel-73
I almost missed you request for more information. The plans for the Engine Starting Safety Stand we use can be downloaded free from our club web-side at www.wilsonrc.org/news.php. Click on Downloads and look for the name Engine Starting Safety Stand. I'll try to post a photo also. I just tried to post the photo but I cannot figure our how to do it with this new system. I hope someone will see this and help me with more information. I'm only 77 years old and still alive.

Villa 10-11-2013 06:39 AM

Hi again izzy-israel-73
I just remembered something else. Some people will resist using the Engine Starting Safety Stands since they never had a need for them before, and have always started the plane on the ground. I did that for years also. Ask them if they ever started a .60 engine while holding the plane on the ground with, one hand, and did not notice that the throttle was wide open? Sure this is stupid, but it has happened to me at least twice that I can remember. In my case, I had the plane on one of our Engine Starting Safety Stand. I built, paid for, and donated to our club, the first stand, after redesigning it.

izzy-israel-73 10-11-2013 07:34 AM

G'day Villa, :)
yes I have seen a Utube video with a accident just as what said about ! We do have a set rule that all planes have to be pegged while starting them 2 pickets standing in front of you're leading edge of your wing!

izzy-israel-73 10-11-2013 08:26 AM
