Do check out the Tactic TR850, it can not be beat for reliability, ease of programming, versatility in channel assignment, has 30 model memory, wireless buddy system, plus many more very nice features not available any where else at the asking price if you are insistent on getting a new Transmitter/Receiver system. Now if you are joining a club, it is nice to have the same brand of system that is popular with the club as you can get experienced advice when you run into questions. I know Spectrum's are very popular and are good radios. I have Spectrum's, Futaba's , Hitec, Airtronics, Tactic and Orange along with some Frsky and Orange receivers. All work well and will do the job, you just get more perks and ease of use with the Tactic for 8 channel or less systems.

The Tactic 850 looks like a good radio, but add a receiver, now you're at $200. I don't think the op is thinking of spending $200 for his first radio.

If you join a club and bring that plane to a meeting and tell them your story, it's almost guaranteed that someone will help with your engine and there is a good chance some one would give you a futaba 72 mhz TX; but you can probably buy a DX6i off one of the members for the cheap.
Join a club, take that plane to the field on a weekend or club meeting and that plane will be in the air at no time. |

It would be nice if someone near me would hop in here. You guys are all awesome. I sprained my shoulder today so no work for me till next week at the earliest. Which means I have more time to mess with this plane and go to the park near me to talk to some of the ppl there. There's two small holes maybe dime size on either side of the wings. What can I do to patch them. Just put some tape over them?
|
Tape is fine. UV resistant clear is preferred but brown packing tape will 'git her done'.
Duct tape makes you a redneck for sure of course. Clean off the area around the hole with soapy water [ plus a quick swipe with acetone if you have any ] then round off the corners of the tape patch before applying. |
I would have thought duct tape to add to much weight
|
Packing tape works and is semi-permant. Rounding of corners will keep it from lifting off. One of these days I'm going to cover an entire plane with just packing tape. I've come close a few times when my temp repairs almost equaled original covering.
|
Clean it real good with isopropyl alcolhol, then make your repair. Heck, if just need some Monokote, let me know.
|
Has anyone ever tried like a tire tube patch?
|
NO. You'd be better off with packing tape. Seriously, I'll send you some MonoKote. All you need is an iron.
|
You never mentioned what part of the US you were in, would help, maybe one of us
is a nearby neighbor!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Bill D. |
Oh Im sorry I thought I had. I'm from NC. I think I may head to Hobby Park today so I can meet some of the club member there.

The plane looks like a Great Planes PT-40 As the name says it's a great plane to learn with. I looks like you are missing the fuel tank and the cover for it - the cover is simply a piece of balsa that is covered with Monokote. I used Marvel Mystery oil for all my engines until I found K-Mart air tool oil. It's the same thing only much cheaper. And I have recovered several engines that were stuck with disuse and gunk and never had to take them apart or even off the airplane. Put the Marvel in the carburetor and let it soak a while then turn the airplane over and let is soak some more. Then you should be able to slowly turn the engine over with the prop. It will loosen up.
The transmitter and receiver for 72 MHz have to be the same channel number. Futaba and Hitec 72 MHz FM transmitters and receivers (7 or less channels) are pretty much interchangeable. Tower also made a compatible one. |

And when you re assemble it, make sure the clunk flops around freely in any attitude.
