Now if you are joining a club, it is nice to have the same brand of system that is popular with the club as you can get experienced advice when you run into questions. I know Spectrum's are very popular and are good radios. I have Spectrum's, Futaba's , Hitec, Airtronics, Tactic and Orange along with some Frsky and Orange receivers. All work well and will do the job, you just get more perks and ease of use with the Tactic for 8 channel or less systems.

I can not find a tr 850. I found a tr 825 and a ttx 850? By chance did you mean the ttx 850?

Tom Nied 05-11-2016 08:58 AM

The Tactic 850 looks like a good radio, but add a receiver, now you're at $200. I don't think the op is thinking of spending $200 for his first radio.

If you join a club and bring that plane to a meeting and tell them your story, it's almost guaranteed that someone will help with your engine and there is a good chance some one would give you a futaba 72 mhz TX; but you can probably buy a DX6i off one of the members for the cheap.
Join a club, take that plane to the field on a weekend or club meeting and that plane will be in the air at no time.

It would be nice if someone near me would hop in here. You guys are all awesome. I sprained my shoulder today so no work for me till next week at the earliest. Which means I have more time to mess with this plane and go to the park near me to talk to some of the ppl there. There's two small holes maybe dime size on either side of the wings. What can I do to patch them. Just put some tape over them?

j.duncker 05-11-2016 03:14 PM

Tape is fine. UV resistant clear is preferred but brown packing tape will 'git her done'.

Duct tape makes you a redneck for sure of course.

Clean off the area around the hole with soapy water [ plus a quick swipe with acetone if you have any ] then round off the corners of the tape patch before applying.

Mixedreef89 05-11-2016 03:40 PM

I would have thought duct tape to add to much weight

warhwk 05-11-2016 03:46 PM

Packing tape works and is semi-permant. Rounding of corners will keep it from lifting off. One of these days I'm going to cover an entire plane with just packing tape. I've come close a few times when my temp repairs almost equaled original covering.

Tom Nied 05-11-2016 04:19 PM

Clean it real good with isopropyl alcolhol, then make your repair. Heck, if just need some Monokote, let me know.

Mixedreef89 05-11-2016 07:26 PM

Has anyone ever tried like a tire tube patch?

Tom Nied 05-11-2016 07:36 PM

NO. You'd be better off with packing tape. Seriously, I'll send you some MonoKote. All you need is an iron.

You never mentioned what part of the US you were in, would help, maybe one of us
is a nearby neighbor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh Im sorry I thought I had. I'm from NC. I think I may head to Hobby Park today so I can meet some of the club member there.

rgburrill 05-12-2016 09:49 AM

The plane looks like a Great Planes PT-40 As the name says it's a great plane to learn with. I looks like you are missing the fuel tank and the cover for it - the cover is simply a piece of balsa that is covered with Monokote. I used Marvel Mystery oil for all my engines until I found K-Mart air tool oil. It's the same thing only much cheaper. And I have recovered several engines that were stuck with disuse and gunk and never had to take them apart or even off the airplane. Put the Marvel in the carburetor and let it soak a while then turn the airplane over and let is soak some more. Then you should be able to slowly turn the engine over with the prop. It will loosen up.
The transmitter and receiver for 72 MHz have to be the same channel number. Futaba and Hitec 72 MHz FM transmitters and receivers (7 or less channels) are pretty much interchangeable. Tower also made a compatible one.

Excellent! I looked up AMA RC fields within 25 miles of Winston-Salem NC. You can do a search yourself at http://www.modelaircraft.org/clubsearch.aspx

Mixedreef89 05-12-2016 11:46 AM

Yup I did that search the other night. Ibe know about hobby park but I didn't know they flew there. No I have the fuel tank and cover. I took them out for cleaning.

It is a good idea to replace the piece of flexible fuel tubing inside the tank. If the rest of the tubing is stiff replace it as well.

Tom Nied 05-12-2016 02:15 PM

And when you re assemble it, make sure the clunk flops around freely in any attitude.

Rodney 05-14-2016 10:55 AM

Mixedreef89 If you Google "Tactic" you will find much info. In my opinion, the 850 is still the best buy for an 8 channel or less radio. The normal price is $179 at Tower Hobbies but they often have coupons or sales. Recently you could (maybe still can) get the 850 and an 8 channel receiver for $159. Even at the $179 price it is a bargain and the receivers are very inexpensive and high quality. Even though it is an 8 channel transmitter, you can use the 6 channel receivers in your plane which is under $30 for their two antenna 6 channel receiver. Do yourself a favor and at least check them out if you plan to buy a new 2.4GHz transmitter and receiver.
