Starting a new build. BUT WHAT MATERIAL?
 

Hello Everyone, I'm starting build and it's been 25 years since my last build. So my question is what is the MATERIAL called that you place over the workbench to pin into. I've forgotten, but I know it was called something. Or what are you guys using now on your workbench? It looks like ceiling tile but not as brittle. Anyways your help would be appreciated.

Cellotex is the trade name and is four by eight feet or avalible in ceiling tiles. Single sided is what I use and the 4x8 sheet cut down to my 'L' shaped work surface. The unfinished brown side takes pins very well for that type of building. The white finish side also makes an excellent cutting surface. I do replace usually every few years depending on what type of building I am doing the most of at the time.

Hey Guys, I looked up those items you both spoke of, but in my area no one carries anything like that any other Idea's.

I just use "Dry wall " , cut it to a size for my bench then tape the edges. ( if you don't tape it you end up with funny marks on your belly . lol ) You can get it at any home depot / lowe's and after it gets bad just get another sheet. Sometimes you can get a broken sheet free . I build on one side and cover on the other . ENJOY !!! RED

Thank You Red, I just called my local lumber company and that's just what he said. In Fact he told me come on down we've got a bunch of "broken pieces in the back". So I think that's the way I'll go cheaper anyways!!

Dry wall, I've been using for years now combine with a plain door ( 4X8 ) that goes for about $12-14 at HD.

Hey Cars II, never thought about using a door as a bench good idea. But drywall is the way to go for sure. Thanks Tom

Hey CarsII, What is the first picture I'm not familiar with that one? The second is a ducted fan I would guess. Nice building though very, very clean. Nice job.

The first is a Sign Kavalier, 30 years in the making, the second is Nick Ziroli'sTurbinator turbine jet all wood, that one, it will have a 19# thrust turbine, 9 years in the making, both completed in the last two months, had to do them, can't have uncompleted kits :)

Carlos, You have been going at it for a while haven't you. Good to see them both getting done. I've got a Pica FW 190D9 and a Top Flight P-40 that I'm just getting going. But before those two I'm putting together a Great Planes Cherokee ARF. It's been 20 years since I built and flown. So I wanted something easy to fly before I start the others. Hopefully it's like riding a bike if you know what I mean. Plus just getting all the tools that stuff you've got to get before you can even start. Took me about a years to pick up all that stuff.

I totally understand your situation, I started building from kits again in January, it had been close to 9 years since I've done that, I assembled a few ARF like my Escapade 30cc but that's just it, I also had to get the bench ready and had to get some tools to start the kit builds.

This is my other build happening slowly but its on the way after stalling for about 5 years, I'm dismantling this ARF and drawing the parts, I've sent that to a laser cut place in Texas from there I will get a laser cut kit to build and to find mistakes, long process, an ARF kit doesn't build like a builder's kit, totally different.

I thought of building the GP Cherokee at some point because it just looks good in the air and it has nice colors but wanted something bigger and I got into gas, my last is the Escapade 30cc, nice airplane, inexpensive, big, very easy to build, it flys awesome with the VVRC 40 twin on it ( over powered a bit :) )

Yea, I thought about that plane also, but the p-40 from Top Flite I got cheap and found a rcgf 26cc on this site and I couldn't pass it up. So my next bird will be gas also. It will be my first so it should be fun. The P-40 calls for .60-.90 so the 26cc will be over kill, but what the heck. I want to try gas.

Like you, I got a tremendous deal that I couldn't resist or refuse on the VVRC 40, I got it for next to nothing, new hardly use, then I needed an airplane to put it on and the Escapade had been released about a year by then and it had proven myself to be good, the rest is history.

Hey Carlos, Have you ever covered a model with Solartex Fabric material?

Not yet but I've heard it isn't that diferent than monokote, here is a good video on how to.

This is what I know, you cut it and apply it like monokote then you paint it, it feels like fabric with glue on one side.

I think a key step for Solartex is when applying paint not to apply too much to keep the weight down.

Hey Carlos, yea I was just wondering if you had tried it, but I wasn't thinking of painting it. It comes in assorted colors like Olive Drab and so on. Just thing about covering a model with it and then use the Airbrush to do any detail work.
