Winter flying is the best! Most glow engines fire up nicely and the air is dencer. We meet on the ice on lake Superior, north of SSM. Beginers love the unlimited runway. The only problem is ccccold figers.

The cold finger thing is why I'm putting the real aerobatic stuff away until spring. The fingers just don't move fast enough to keep up with the plane!

I made a set of "mitts" from a kids snowsuit. I put my hands in the leg holes and the tx goes in the top. I velcro the tx in (with the antenna out.) Also I cut out a piece and sewed in a clear vinal window to see the radio. This works great! I don't know why but it's really tough to fly with gloves on. Some fliers just cut out the thumb tips of their gloves.

I'm new on his site and one week old on a computer so forive my screwups. Winter flying is great. Many new fliying fields open up. Maybe not the organized type but the posibilities multiply with the snow. I have flown seaplanes off floats in deep snow but I still think just about any taildragger on skis is the way to go. I've used plastic pop bottles, cloroplast, aluminum, fire hydrant markers and lite plywood as skis. I think the lite ply is best. I also make torsion bars out of stanless steel fill rod to keep the skis flexing just right. If you bend the rod into Dubro's dural gear it works terrific

bdtsr, what field do you fly at? Yes it dosen't really get cold here(with the exception being last year). I use 5% all year. I have used the bloody finger method of starting with no problem in the winter. Yes, we did have a good storm over the weekend, almost got water in my garage

my club lights a fire when its cold. if yours doesnt i suggest bringing twice as many jackets, gloves, and hats as you would when there is a fire. it doesnt seem cold but when you get out there and fly you can feel you fingers after the first turn in the air. then youre too cold to wipe the snot off your face. then your ears freeze. flying in the cold is great as long as youre warm. follow everyone else's tips and youre set

I fly with the Skyblazers (mainly Strawberry Field on 322). I also fly at Downstown. My buddy lives on Bartram by the 34th St. bridge and he had water in his garage. While at Shore Memorial on Saturday morning (blessed with another kidney stone!) one of the nurses who lives on Bay Ave, said her street was flooded up into her yard.

If the field is covered with soft snow, a flying hull type seaplane (Like the Seamaster) is my first choice.

But seeing as how you are in Green Bay, I would imagine that snowmobiling is as popular there as it is here. Every year the town plows a track on the frozen lake for weekend snowmobile races. That track becomes my runway when they're not using it. :D

If you guys want to understand cold, come up here to northern ontario. In najuary and february you can consider yourself lucky to get the car started to drive to the feild. Dont even bother taking off your gloves, and starting a glow is out of the question. Thankfully there are other days when yoiu can fly.

I use float planes & a coro sea/ski plane flying boatski thing-a-ma-jig. The big problem is freezing fingers -- it is usually ~ -20C, or colder, here.

shovel a 50 ft runway!... that would get interesting when you get 6 ft of snow
i give up for the winter, well with fuel power, i whip out the shock flier dont have to warm up the engine!
