What is the best way to attach an exhaust deflector?

They normally come with a tie wrap, as long as the stub at the end of the muffler is long enough it should be okay i normally use a pair of long nose pliers to get it as tight as i can.

I also safety wire mine on, after the tie wraps failed a few times !! Usually in the field. never to be seen again ![:o] Haven't lost one since !:D

I cleaned the tip of the muffler to get rid of fuel residue,let dry and use two tie's ,no problems yet,i was gonna use another like you have yours tied,i think your idea would be better than another tie wrap showing.

Put the exhaust deflector on the mufflew facing how u want. Drill a 1/16 hole through both of them all the way through both sides. Take a small wire and put it through until you reach the half point of the wire and wrap the rest fof it around the exhaust deflector.

Clean the end of the muffler really well with some rubbing alcohol. Put a thin bead (1/16") of JB Weld on end of muffler. Let dry. Push exhaust deflector over bead and tighten down tie strap above the bead of JB Weld.

I have had mine on my engine for ages now - it even survived a crash :) I cleaned the exhaust end thoroughly with methylated spiritis and then stuck the deflector on. I fixdd it to the exhaust with a couple of tie wraps.

Why do you guys use those things? Do you really keep the crap off your planes? The only time I ever used one, it only caused my plane to lose RPM's and get hot(ter), and it still got residue all over the plane. I attatched my to the garbage can. Just curious. |

I wanted to try one just to see if they really worked,it did but i found somethiing else,before the install i couldn't see fuel coming out the exhaust,why you ask ?,because i heard a good tuned engine would leave a vapor trail,before i put mine on i couldn't see a vapor trail because of prop wash,now it's easy to see.It may not be the truth but i did hear it ,now it works so good i might put on some extra pipe and tie it to my landing gear just to see.

Ugo could that wire around your engine cause metal to metal inteferance? i dont really know much about it just what i've read on these forums.

What is metal to metal interference? If your referring to dissimilar metal corrosion, I highly doubt it will play much of a factor that would be of any concern. If you choose to use the lock-wire method I would recommend a .020 - .032 monel type. (Monel= high heat resistant). I dont think it be necessary to wrap it around your engine though. I would attempt to limit it to the pipe/exhaust for anchoring.

If you're talking about radio interference.... None at all ! I wrap the safety wire (.032) around the engine to hold on to the Muffler assembly which it too has come off a time or two and has been hanging off the safety wire. At $20- $30 a piece, The wire is cheap insurance! I Swear this is true....Two Mufflers were lost in the grass this morning at the field !! One was off a OS.108. That's $35 bucks. Buddy !! Might not look to cool but at 100 feet who cares? Don't tell me that I'm not securing my mufflers correctly, I've try all the methods other than welding them in place ! LOL !:)

LOL !:) Ugo As far as RPM is concerned. I must be exception to the rule because I still turn the same RPM with or without a deflector. |

The locknut doesn't come off, ( I even add Zap-a-Dap- Goo to the end of the nut). The shaft breaks off at the nut ! Vibratrion ,I guess. And no, I don't over tighten the nut. This has only happended once. Easy fix, replaced the broken shaft with some " All Thread" rod with a lock nut on each end.

Two stroke glow engines are not real tolerant of long exaust extentions, you will cause excess heat to build up, and lots of power loss. Not too healthy for the engine. |

My Dubro exhaust extension is a little bigger than the in on the muffler and it iss't that long but if i dio decide to go to a longer extension,it will slip on the "outside" of the exesting tube,i've also thought about relieving some back pressure by opening up some of the holes but if i do that it will come later.

Yep metal to metal interferance is why you shouldn't use say a metal clevis to a metal throttle arm as the two pieces of metal vibrate together and can cause radio inteferance in some circumstances.

As I was told by tech support at OS, the reason the screw / nut breaks is because it has been overtightened. After running the engine for a while, the heat causes the screw to expand at a different rate than the muffler, and it snaps, causing the end of the muffler to fall off in flight.
