i dont know were else to put this but im guessing one of you, maby minn, knows...
has anyone tried to get a smoke system on a saito .91? how did you set it up? does it give good smoke?

I'm glad you asked, I was about to start a thread just like this. I have a Saito 100 in a Tiger 60. I was hopeing someone could recommend a smoke system/setup for me as well!

MinnFlyer has used a smoke system on his Super Skybolt with an OS (I believe) 91. From the pictures I have seen, it made great smoke.

Sorry guys, I just got back from a long weekend vacation.

My smoke system is on a YS 91 and I now have one on a Saito 150, but it hasn't been tested yet.

I would guess that a Saito 91 would work fine, but remember the rules... Rule #1 - There ARE no rules! So try different things

Something that I left out of the article (I think I left it out anyway) is that something else you can try is to insulate the muffler to keep it hot. I have mine (On the YS) wrapped with a thin layer of household fiberglass insulation. It is then wrapped with aluminum foil tape and the tape is held on with a few wraps of copper wire. I have used this from the start, so I don't know how much it helps, but anything that gets that oil hotter faster is good.

I just installed a TME pump system in my Pac Edge 540 Saito 100 last night.... I am waiting on the Slimline pitts to get here on Friday but in the mean time I tapped a muffler manifold and gave it a try last night...(in the dark) and yes even without preheating I was able to get some good results. I will let you know how much difference the slimline makes... I have found you have to make adjustments to the flow thats for sure. The nice thing about the TME pump is I can adjust the amount from the TX by setting a mix on a switch... so as throttle increases the amount being pumped increases and just flip aswitch to turn it totaly off. I will let you know after the big test this weekend.

Try the saito smoke mufflers by EJRS they sell here on RCU for about$25-35 and work excellent!!

Me too!! I'm going to set up smoke on my Pitts 12 and need all the info I can get. Pump will either be a TME or a Slimline Showtime Pro.

I have one question regarding the 2Stroke setup:

You mention the oil has to be as hot as possible... I remember seeing a diagram where the Copper tubing was wrapped around the muffler several "loops" before entering the exhaust. Would that be a good idea for the 2 Stroke?

Vasek, I don't use pre-heat, Maybe I'm just lucky and don't need it - but what I recommend is to try it without first. After all, why go through the hassles if you don't need to?

IF you then decide you need to pre-heat... Now keep in mind that I am just speculating here... but it seems to me that taking heat from your muffler would be counter productive. After all, you want your muffler to be as hot as possible, by coiling the copper tubing around the muffler, you're heating the oil, but you're also cooling the muffler.

I would try wrapping the copper tubing around the engine's head, or maybe even around the exhaust port before I would wrap it around the muffler.

But again, there ARE no rules, so whatever works... works!

Minn, I just saw a smoke valve & tubing by Dubro with a little arm on the valve that just requires an extra servo to activate it. This thing says it works off the pressure nipple on the backplate of the crankcase, with no pump needed. The price for this thing was $9.99 at the LHS.

I'm a firm believer that you pretty much get what you pay for! Is this thing gonna be $10 worth of headache & junk? Or do you think it might actually work?[&:]

I just found this thread but I'm testing my smoke system tomorrow. I have a Evo 1.00 2-stroke w/ a pitts muffler. 2-strokes don't get that hot so I had to use 1/8" copper tubing insulated with 3 layers of fiberglass & aluminum tape as a preheater. I post the video this weekend. Here are some pics:

Mark, about all I can say about that valve is that it MIGHT work.

IF your engine can give away some of it's crankcase pressure without affecting performance, and IF that pressure is enough to push oil into the muffler at a good rate, then yes, it will work.

I even have one of those valves, but never really had the desire to tap a backplate.

Minn knows what he's talking about. I've seen guys tap the crank case to pump the smoke oil through, but I wasn't comfortable with drilling a hole in my engine. It was much easier to get a pump (I got a Sullivan Showtime Kit-all tubing, filters, clamps needed for $69.99 at tower) and a separate 6V battery to power the pump. I made my stand to where I can test everything (smoke system & engine) remotely with the TX. Here's a few pics:

Nope, this is the great thing about 1/8" copper tubing; it's so soft that you can wrap it around a pencil (~1/4" diameter) 20 times without getting kinks! 1/8" Copper tubing is available at most auto parts store in 6" rolls for $9.77. I got mine from Advance Auto Parts here in FL.

Mods, Very nicely done! I was just looking at that very same pump last nite.

Mike. I hear ya on not wanting to drill & tap a brand new back-plate on a engine. This Saito 100 comes with the pressure nipple allready installed in the back-plate. It the of course has another one installed in the muffler. I read someone else's post stating that a 4-stroke doesn't create enough pressure by themselves like a 2-stroke does. I don't know if that is accurate or not, but I'll be using a pump just to save on the headache factor.[&:]
