RE: Four star build
if they are the control horns.....wouldn't that be done after covering;)
|
RE: Four star build
The horns could be pre-fitted. Then the horns could be removed and the wood "hardened" with CA to prevent crushing or distortion prior to covering.
|
RE: Four star build
Ahhhhhh
|
RE: Four star build
Take a look at the pictures he's attached, it looks like he has the ailerons already covered.
|
RE: Four star build
yep I see it now....
So....how is the trainer coming along;) |
RE: Four star build
I alreayd have the trainer rebiult ready to go, but just haven't had a day to fly it yet. The things i am talking about are control horns, but they have the threaded metal things, then go to the ailerons. I don't know what they are called. But i think i will switch to control horns if possible.
The LHS has the 7caf with digital servos i was supposed to order the same price as tower, so i will probably be getting it today. I am most likely gonna redo join the wing. |
RE: Four star build
Hope it flies well.
Torque rods. got a meeting. gotta run,. |
RE: Four star build
Chad,
Take a few minutes to re-read the instructions so that you refer to the correct parts by their correct names. These aileron control things on the wings the threaded metal things But i think i will switch to control horns if possible. |
RE: Four star build
Nope-He has the 40. From what I understand it comes single servo and that is the way he is building it. That means torque rods, not horns. If he was dual servos, then he would have horns.
Chad, unless you go dual servo, I can't think of a way to use control horns as you must have a way to translate the motion out to the ailerons. BEFORE you mount the ailerons you must make decision of single or dual. You can convert to dual later but it is more difficult to put the torwue rods in after the ailerons have been mounted. The threaded part is where the aileron linkage attaches to the torque rods for adjusting. |
RE: Four star build
Bruce,
Thanks for clearing it up. It's hard to know what is going on when the terminology isn't correct. |
RE: Four star build
Sorry about that. I was thinking about it forever and the word couldnt come to me. I think I will go with dual servos. now (grr i change my mind too much) so, where and how should i mount these servos?

RE: Four star build
Now is the time to get MinnFlyer to put in the drawings that he would have a long time ago if you had ever answered his question about whether or not it had cap strips. People are trying to help and you have been ignoring them after asking advice. NOT GOOD.
MinnFlyer- Do you have the drawing ready??? Dual ailerons without capstrip.[sm=confused.gif] I think it would work good in the third bay out from the sheeted center section. MinnFlyer- There appears to be an aft spar running accross the bay that may effect the installation. Chad- If you could stand the wing up on the leading edge and take a picture of the bottom of the wing in that area so we can see how things will fit, it would help. Oh yeah, post the picture. We can go from there. Is there nothing on the plans |
RE: Four star build
nothing about duals on the plans. whats a Cap strip?
|
RE: Four star build
It is a thin strip (about 1/4 wide) that goes on the edge of the ribs. It stiffens them and give the covering a smoother appearance. DO NOT go adding them if not designed in, they won't fit unless ribs are cut for them.
|
RE: Four star build
I think it does... Not sure though...

RE: Four star build
Where exactly on the ribs is it? As end do you mean back?

Chad,
The cap strips will be placed on top of each rib, usually from the spar down to the front of the leading edge. It is a strip of wood that is usually 2-3 times as wide as the rib is wide. Look at the side view example that I've included. The cap strip will be the area in between the 2 red lines. |
RE: Four star build
If you want to look, I started a tread on the building of my 4 Star. Had pictures on the building of the aerilon servo brackets
Good luck |
RE: Four star build
None of your current pictures show cap strips so if the wings are completely assembled, you have none. That is OK. It just changes the way the wing servos are installed slightly. I sent PM to Minn and he is getting a drawing ready for you. Hang in there until he has it ready. the more you do now, the more you may need to undo to install!
SLOW DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OK? Go sand the fuselage or something or better yet- STUDY. :D |

here is SWAGERS thread:

Here is how I would do it,
make a 1/8" Plywood plate that will fit between two ribs with a hole cut out for the servo Glue it between the ribs about 3/16" below the surface and reinforce it with Triangle stock. Using 1/4" stock, build a box around the servo cutout - About 1/8" larger than the cutout on all sides. Sand the tops of the box even with the ribs (Be careful not to sand the ribs - taping some tin foil to the tops of them is a good way to keep from saning into them) |
RE: Four star build
Remember to have the servos in the bottom of the wing. the 1/4 stock is to have something to attach the covering to. Use soft to med-soft wood for the 1/4 and it will sand easier, sand until it matches profile of wing. Plan servo location fore/aft around the spar locations. DO NOT cut the spars. Use extensions or y-harness as needed to get signals to servos. Make sure there is a path for the wiring to follow, plan this part out. This is where the wire guide tube would have been nice. They can come out thru a SMALL hole in the center of the wing TOP SIDE. Go slow and plan before you cut wood. Make cardboard templates and test fit things before committing to wood, faster and easier to work with. Just remember difference in thicknesses. Use wood glue to mount components, not CA or Gorilla. Not a rush. Accuracy, not speed.

RE: Four star build
ok thanks for the comments. Should i go ahead and rejoin the wing or do it unjoined? And between what ribs should i put it between.
The wing is not joined because that last connection was bad and i want to get it perfect. |
