compatability question
I have read that JR and Airtronics are very simular, and that you can use a JR transmitter with a Airtronics reciver. The only problem and my question is how? I have a extra JR radio and a extra Airtronics reciver and would like to know what I need to do to use these together in my next plane. any help would be appreciated, thanks...

RE: compatability question
There is no trick. You just need an Airtronics receiver crystal on the same channel as your JR transmitter. You can use any brand of servos; they don't care what receiver they are plugged into.

You can use any brand servo that you want to, you just need to make sure they are wired properly. Each brand of servo is a little bit different. Please refer to attached picture for wiring diagrams for different servo brands
Hope this helps Ken |
RE: compatability question
thanks it helps alot. I guess I cannot use a airtronics crystal on a jr system though right?

RE: compatability question
Although JR does make some dual conversion Rx's its highly likely that your Rx is a single conversion unit. On the other hand its very likely the Airtonics Rx you have is a dual conversion unit. You cannot mix single and dual conversion crystals. Having said that its very poor practice to not use the same brand crystal as the device you insert it in. Even though they may be the same channel, manufacturers contract their crystals to be cut to match their equipments electrical characteristics. Some combinations may work others not at all and with all you are the test pilot.
Please understand that this crystal swapping only applies to Rx's. In the US it is aginst FCC regulation to swap Tx crystals with out a certified retune. There are viable reason for this in the US and it goes beyond just whether or not it works in your radio. John |
RE: compatability question
Just noticed you are from Canada so your rules about tX crystal swaping may vary but I suspect your rules are very close to what applies here.

RE: compatability question
Sorry to hijack this thread. I am in a somewhat similar situation. I have an Airtronics transmitter but cannot find an Airtronics Rx crystal on channel 36. They are back ordered. From what I am reading it is ok to put a JR Rx crystal in my Airtronics Rx module? Thanks for your help!

RE: compatability question
Brad,
I've been using Airtronics for 9 years, but I've never heard that you could use JR cyrstals. I would be hesitant to try that even if somebody says you can. Where have you tried to get channel 36 from? Have you called Airtronics directly? They're usualy pretty good about have all frequencies on hand. Hope this helps Ken |
RE: compatability question
Brad the majority of JR Rx's in use are single conversion units (yes they use a proprietary filtering system) single conversion and dual conversion crystals are not at all compatable and therefore I beleve this combination will not work. Even if you tried and if it did work on the bench its not a good idea as you are now a test pilot for an untested RF system combination that is likely not up to full performance.

Brad,
Have you tried Great Hobbies? They can usually get their hands on Airtronics stuff reasonably quickly..might take a week or two though..... |

ORIGINAL: CP140 Brad, Have you tried Great Hobbies? They can usually get their hands on Airtronics stuff reasonably quickly..might take a week or two though..... I don't know if I order wierd stuff from Great Hobbies or what the case is, but they never have anything in stock that I want. They told me it may take a month or more to get crystal in stock[sm=spinnyeyes.gif]. I have had the same problem with them when I last ordered from them. Today I pushed my LHS and they have found me a compatable Airtronics Rx crystal. I ended up phoning Airtronics myself to see what was going on. They said they have lots of crystals in stock but us Canucks are not buying them:eek: I have a performace devices crystal coming next week for a quarter of the price. Thanks for your help. |
