Finally did it!
I just got into RC planes a few months back, been buying planes, motors, controllers,etc, from here and off ebay. Well, I finally flew one of them. When I first started getting into to all of this I figured I'd get one of the local club guys to get me off the ground and buddy-box me thru a couple of fights. But after spending quite of bit of time on the GP flight simulator I figured I'll just do it on my own. A buddy from work met me at the airfield to help me out, as well as be a witness to what I figured to be at least one good crash. Well, I took off 3 times, and landed 3 times! Oh sure, neither were very pretty or graceful, but hey, I did it and the plane is ready to go again.
I did join the AMA months ago so I'm covered on that front. But still, if any of ya'll feel like ya must scold me, go right ahead. I had my fun, now you can have yours!:) But seriously, it was a hoot to finally fly. I'm definitely hooked on this hobby. Heck I better be, I've already spent a good sum of money! See ya'll at the airfield! |

Now I know there will be some of you that will now blast me for not getting proper training and instruction before taking a plane up on my own, let me just say it now so I won't have to respond later, JUST KISS MY @%$# ;). See ya'll at the airfield! Congrats. Some people can and do teach themselves to fly successfully. From the way I understand it, the AMA does not cover you if you are not flying at an AMA sanctioned field. I just wanted you to be aware of that plus it's secondary to any other insurance. WRONG! As long as you are following AMA Safety Rules, you're covered anywhere you fly. The AMA makes suggestions for field layouts, but does not license fields, they charter clubs. Their suggestions for field layout are just that, suggestions only. Dr.1 |

Dr1Driver is right about an AMA sanctioned field. Our flying field is located on an Army base so we researched having the field "sanctioned". First of all, the only time the term "AMA Sanctioned" really means anything is if you are putting on an event such as a contest of fun fly, etc... As far as the AMA insurance covering your. We called the AMA and spoke directly with them to find out what we need to make sure our individual AMA insurance was good. The answer we were given is as Dr1Driver said, the AMA rules need to be followed. But, AND THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART, a copy of the current AMA safety rules MUST be posted at the flying site. If they are not then the insurance is not in effect. It is just that simple. As I said above, we got that information directly from the AMA. Based on that we no longer pay the yearly club dues to the AMA, but we all maintain our individual AMA memberships so we will be covered in the event of an accident. BTW, the rules the Army posted on the field require all flyers to have current AMA membership.

JD ---- We are glad to hear that you learned on your own, as said before some can and some can't but PLEASE take this part to Heart:: Now that you can fly, get with some of the rest of the club and listen to some of the things they suggest and talk about. Yes in a way I'm talking about rules but really I'm talking about being a good member and respecting others so they respect you. In the long run it makes for a much more fun sport. Sorry about the preaching ( I hate that ). ENJOY !!!!! RED

Thanks Red. I have been going to the airfield when I know that some of the club members will be there, just to hang out with them and pry their minds for knowledge. They all have been ( and will be) very helpful on a various subjects.
The airfield is owned by the city, but most of the maintenance is done by the local club, North Texas Aeromodelers. I'm sure I'll be joining the club here real soon, if for no other reason to help pay for their maintenance costs. |
