Field boxes

Hi All,
Well, I got my plane and all the equipment to get started and all I need now is a field box. Does anyone know of any net sites that can be downloaded with good building ideas? I have a half sheet of 1/4" plywood and 1" wood dowel which could be used.
Any suggestions are most appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Wayne.

Go to Alan's RC page http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~atong/ Scroll about 1/2 way down. There are some plans for field boxes.

Check out the rest of the page also. There is a lot of very good info there - answers to questions you haven't thought of yet :D

I bought a fairly large plastic tool box in a building supply store.
It holds my 12V battery, Fuel bottle, a box of tools, electric starter, extra props etc...
I can recommend this setup, it's cheap, simple and light weight.

The black box is for transmitter, charger and battery tester.

There was a couple guys on e-bay that were building & selling some pretty nice & sturdy looking field boxes. You might check & see if they're still on there. They had pretty good pics, good enough to build from with your dimensions. Good luck & Merry Christmas

Nice box there Scolpit. I found a set of plans on the web in CAD format that I used for building mine just this weekend, plans are in spanish, they guy also has some cool aircraft plans there for free. http://aerobenavente.iespana.es/ you want to click on the left menu on "Caja de vuelo" for the tool box

Enjoy

RE: Field boxes

Good luck with your box:) Here's mine, i build it with a tank place, radio place (with a hole to charge), i do not have to remove my radio from box to charge it. Made holes to put glow plug heater.. etc, The airplane support is removal, so i can change for other support, I built mine without plans, just saw a few boxes, and built it. Hope it helps.

You can buy that same box on ebay, for 20 bucks, then buy the power panel:

Hi Scolpit,
Thanks for taking the time to take pictures. Great looking field box. Hope mine turns out that good. By the way, how much does yours weigh with all the stuff you need to go out to the field.
Have a Great Christmas and New Year.
Wayne
PS, I paid for MAAC today for a membership for 2006, its $75.00 here in Canada for a year. How much is it in the States ?

I don't know for sure, but its heavy... It should be around 10~15lb.
Box, 12V battery, fuel, starter, radio....
I used strong wood (heavy). I dont have to carry it for long distances, so it is ok to me...

RE: Field boxes

Mine is super heavy i suggest you build it to last.

I built a convetional field box from plywood and particle board (heavy!). Then, I got a tackle box from Wal-Mart, and now I wind up carrying both to the field. The tackle box is for spare parts and stuff, and the convetional field box is for fuel, Windex, rags, glow drivers, and the starter. BTW, the starter changes homes every once in a while

Kingman isn't the middle of nowhere, it's on the way to Ash Fork, which is the middle of nowhere. A guy at the field mounted wheels to the bottom of his field box and pulls it around with a dog leash.

RE: Field boxes

i am a lazy b-st-rd so i got an electric golf trolley and built a flight box to fit it,it has a 12v 24ah battery in the bottom which powers everything and a cradle on top to carry the models, the site is about 3/4 of a mile from the car park so why waste energy.

RE: Field boxes

hahahah. thats hilarious man. dog leash!!!! but anyways speaking of more imortant matters, you still live in the middle of nowhere.lol j/k

RE: Field boxes

Hmmm, middle of nowhere can have its advantages for example, we are in the middle of the longest remaining continuous section of old Route 66 from Kingman to Seligman Az just a bit short of Ash Fork and 85 miles distant. This has provided us with the rare opportunity for RC cross country flights with full cooperation of the tribal police responsible for this route on a number of occassions.

Hi All,
Well I finished my field box and took pictures of it. Thanks for all your ideas, it helped. I also made a field box for my hangar 9 Alpha 40 to cut down on hangar rash at home and in transport to and from the field, made from cardboard and pine, just fits fine in my 4x4.
I've tried to attach the photos and had no success, does anyone know how to do it...HELP!!!!!
