Is there any where you can buy a cordless starter other than making your own bye tapeing a battery to the bottom? thanks Kieth

Personally, I think the Sullivan is a better unit.

I agree with KW Counter. I have the Sullivan Dynatron starter with the Sullivan battery pack. I have 3300 mha NiCds in it, making 14.4 volts, not just 12, and I can start everything up to my 4.8 ci Brison twin. Might cost a bit more in the short run but definitely worth it in the long run.

I was trying to keep the cost down a bit. This is a better (higher torque) unit.

Look under starters at Tower or Omni models for Helimax & rechargeable battery packs. Two 1500 mAh 6 cell packs.
Starter $34.99 - battery packs $29.99. Very handy and very powerful. Much better than the Tower self contained.

This brings price to @ $95.

I've used one and found it uncomfortable to use. Others liked it.

I used this for a couple year and they work good on engine's 60 or less. I could pull over 1.00's but could only do it two or three times. I eveually had to just strap a battery to the bottom

These are some of the best out there. Compact, Self contained, reliable, easy to use and absolutely fantastic service. The total cost is about $125 but you get the starter/batery and charger... and the service.

Max and Todd Blose are super nice guys and their starters are used by pilots all over the US. I have the magnum version for my YS 1.60.
The regular and kavan will easily start anything up to a 1.40 at least.
They could start my 1.60, but only after it had been run the 1st time.

The black one above from Central Hobbies is a good one as well. It uses a couple of the RC truck batteries for power. It too is compact and powerful.

I have the big hobbico battery attached to my starter using a couple "BIG" wire ties. I cut the cord from the starter and attached some different connnectors for the battery. Been using that design for years.

I know they make special battery pack sets for this but they don't seem to have the "????" to turn over a healthy engine.

Thanku all for th replies..i didnt really know there were that many options out there...guess i have some thinking to do...the biggest engine i run at this time is an o.s 91 4 stroke but i am sure that will change eventually:D Kieth

That's looks like a pretty good one for the price if it is as powerfull as they claim it is. If not I guess you could allways use it to rob a bank.:D

I ran a 60size (IIR?) Magnum starter to start a .42 and a .52fourstroke
but I used just 8 cell 9.6v nominal electric airplane batts, cp1300 shorties

Just lettin ya'll know that even underpowered with 9.6v Lil'Batts, it will do a .40 class engine fine

I couple of folks above indicated that voltage is what is needed for a really effective portable unit and I could not agree more up to about 1.20 displacement.

This is the cheapest hobbico or tower or whatever starter avalible with very simple holders and powered by two 3000 Nimh seven cell sticks. This provides 16.8 volts in series that results in much higher RPM that is far more effective than any other up to about 1.20.

Each stick pack was twenty bucks with its own wal wart from a supplier for paint guns. The additional voltage is no problem for the motor itself.

There is one serious disadvantage for this one and that is the fact that it is always vanishing and I have to go looking for it at the field, everyone wants to use it as their wimpy 12v portables die out.

If I ever feel the need for the big two or four strokes over 120 then I,ll just put one together with a geared motor.

lol,,, redfox's is EXACTLY what I had down to the yellow zipties before I got my BP starter.... It works great on anything up to about 1.2 or a well broken in 1.4...

The Kavan starter and batteries may be a bit expensive but it is the best I've ever seen. Other than the high cost of the batteries it really does the work.
