Mid Star 40 build questions
 

Just got the kit today and was wondering if anyone has some do's or dont's experiences with this kit. I just started going over the prints and manual. First thought I got was mabey some more meat to the turtle deck, also some concern over the spars. Any thing else that might need some attention. I have to order out of town as we have no LHS so would like to address as much as I can before placing order. Other than these the wood looks good and can't wait to get started.

I don't remember any details beyond the fact that it was super easy to build. I had mine built and maidened within a week of evenings. Great little plane.

I built mine stock with the exception of going to wing mounted
dual aileron servos and a Sullivan tail wheel bracket.

It really doesnt need anything else. Its a good build and
results in a rugged good flying plane.

I was also going dual aileron also, I put them on my Kadet Senior also. I'll have to check out also the sullivan bracket. Got started on the wing as we speak ( type).

The only problem I had was with the ailerons, as they're pretty thin, and tend to flex. I used the CA hinges, and found out that, due to their stiffness, the tips of the ailerons had about half the throw of the inboard ends(hope that makes sense). As a result, I couldn't get a decent roll. I cut the hinges, except for the inboard-most on each side and installed clear monokote hinges. Now I have a completely different airplane, very responsive, with crisp rolls. Glen

Hello; I have built 3 of these wonderful planes, After the first one I added cap strips to the ribs from the spars to the leading edge. I did this at first to give the covering some thing to attach to, but it improved the flying characteristics of an already good wing. I also put tri stock gussets along each side of the vertical stab to reinforce it. The first one I built, I covered in the Extra 300 pattern blue with red and white, it looked very good. I wish I had one now.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I have hard hinges for the control surfaces to put on. I will install tri stock on the verticle stab as you mentioned. About what size did you use, I have some 3/4" kicking around if that would suffice.

Do away with the dihiedral. 0-degrees of down thrust. Servo for each aileron. Be sure to balance plane left to right, not as forgiveing as top wing aircraft. Use .46 ball bearing..
Use some triangle stock on both sides of horz. and vert. stab to fusalage for reinenforement. Do not use cheap platic control rod clevis's that come with it.

Thought I had better get an update in before it's ready for maiden. Just getting the pushrods installed, then rx, batt. pack and wheels. I used ultracote chrome for the wing LE and ran into some problems with it kinda fogging of the finish on some spots while shrinking up. Anybody eles run into this? [>:]

You plane looks great! ITs too late now but I read that the spars for the wings may be too soft so some builders replaced them with spruce instead so thats what I did with mine. I just used the single servo for the ailerons which works well with no problems. I did replace the crappy push rods with the Golden rods and I used a Sullivan tail wheel. Very nice plane. Mine takes off in about 15 feet! [8D]

I ended going with a single servo on the wing, didn't seem like to much depth in the wing for dual. Also went with aftermarket pushrods, Laser rods, don't know how good they are. I have a sullivan tail wheel assembly for it also. I've only got about 10 flights on the Kadet so far so I'll get a half dozen more flights in before I send it up.
