Second Plane?
I see someone says the Kaos is a touchy plane. You must have set the CG too far back. Or had the control surfaces with to much throw, set to high. With a forward CG is a *****cat and is a great second plane. But that is why they make chocolate and Vanilla and Strawberry. And this is what makes this forum so neat.

Back to the topic...
I must have been dreaming about a 4*40 ARF, although I believe there is an ad in the MAN that a gent will custom build them. But the comments on the added costs of the .60....
A little unfounded, I think - the initial cost of the kit isn't that much different, the cost of a motor .60 versus .40 isn't much different either...an extra roll of covering possibly. But the rest, radio, etc, is about the same. I feel the advantages of a .60 size over a .40 size, especially for a second plane, well outweight the cost differences. A bigger plane is easier to see, as well as easier to fly, the bigger they are, the better they fly. I flew my 4*60 in Oklahoma, where the wind is tremendous, and never had a problem, that is, until the crane jumped out in front of it! But it didn't have any problems handling up to about 20 mph winds. And landings were ALWAYS a treat! In fact, a friend who had just soloed on his trainer, took the controls of the 4*60 - flew out the fuel, first time with a low wing, low passes on the deck, flew it like he'd been flying for years! i still heartily recommend it, as a good 2nd plane...if not, at least as a first low wing, and when you feel competent on it, take one wing rib bay off, and spice it up, for aerobatics...so maybe it'll be your 2nd, and 3rd plane!! Wel, I'm getting back after 20 years and I did have a double wing and covered it with nylon. No throttle and I ran it until the tank was empty. Was fun and I did vertical 4 point rolls while it was climbing so I did have some hands on time with the aerobatic type. Just needed some input on the newer stuff on the market today and I did receive some direct mail so I think for sure i'm going with the PITTS.. There are several other models that are called the PITTS but their not like the one Great planes has, BIG :D On another post someone did say that it was easy to handle so that made up my mind to go for it. I have the winter months to make it perfect and then i'll locate a good instructor. Many thanks for the input :) I figure another $200.00 for radio gear. So that will come to a bit over $600.00 Not bad for a 1/3 scale bird :) |

Morning Whirley Bird, let us know how you like building and flying the GP Pitts, nice looking plane, thanks.

I guess in another three weeks I start building it and i'll be here for some good advice. Right now i'm trying to locate the PIC of the one I flew back in 87. If I find it i'll figure out how to put it here. They are a plane in their won world and a ball to fly :D |

kingman:
a good way to advance is to move to a mid-wing design as a second plane and later to a low wing as your third plane.- ugly sticks type are general excellent choices!!!, try to get one that allows you to use the same engine you have as well as your radio.- later you can buy a bigger engine and a computer radio to experiment new things!! |
Second Plane?
Ok, thanks for all of the replies! I have checked some of the planes out and I am liking the 4* and the Super Sportster. Let me know if these are good choices... I have an OS 46FX on my H9 Solo trainer now.

Second Plane?
I had a 4* 40 as my second plane and an Ultra Stick as my 3rd plane. I have only been flying for about a year.
The 4* 40 was hard for me to land because it would float so much and I couldnt get it down. It flew nicely and if i could get a perfect landing approach, it would land nicely too. I do love my stick. It lands so smooth, it makes u look like a pro! The Ultra stick can be very gentle when you want it, or very aerobatic. Both choices would be great IMO. The stick is an ARF and the 4* is a kit. On the other hand, the US needs 7 servos= more $$ and the 4* just needs 4. Cant go wrong with either, Good luck! |
Super Sportster
I would pick the Super Sporster.
Better Wind Penitration, Lands with out the float of the 4 *. and a fully symetrical wing, which is a D tube construction. Meaning its a stronger wing than the 4*s. Like I said before I have both and both are good planes am just pointng out the pluses over the two planes. IF you are going to build it instead of going with the ARF though the 4* is and easier plane to build. THE DIBO  |
Second Plane?
morris knife edge is a great choice easy to fly, land, and will cut up the sky as well!! .51 super tigre pushes plenty of air.

Some fly better then others while some are more eye catching. The PITTS has it ALL:) |
Second Plane?
Ok, I have decided... I am probably going to go with the Super Sportster ARF. I think it looks better than the 4*, and it has better wind penetration and better landings. Thanks again for all of the posts.

After looking through TH catallogs and some web sites I don't know what I want now. Someone sent me this neat link http://www.modelairplanenews.com/ .They have a nice trainer there I'd like to pick up for my Girl Friends brother. Does anyone know anything about the>>> The engine is the new .46-size Evolution A, and the thick black disc is a flywheel for easy engine starting and a Comes with a 3 blade prop and makes it fly slower. Also never heard of the radio gear. Not listed in TH cataog anyway  |

I think you are talking about the Alpha trainer by Hangar 9. It is at www.horizonhobby.com Tower hobbies does not carry it.
hope this helps |

I know I can get the kit a nice trainer from TW but so many come through with a bad covering. Any info? |

Thats the first time I saw where a small engine needed a ffly wheel to keep the engine running smooth. My OS 40 runs nice and maybe I should try adding a fly wheel<GRIN> |
Second Plane?
The RX/TX is from the JR line. From what I hear and my expierience a reputable company. I have not seen one fly, but what is so great about this plane is the hard work is done for you, The control gear is all set up and the engine doesnt need much maintenece at all. the engine also has "limiters" so you wont run too lean or rich. (common mistake when a beginner)
I made it several times. Let me know if you need more info. |
Second Plane?
What do you want to get from the trainer. My 2 cents- I started on a right flyer 60 and its an awesome flyer, and the engine I used on my next airplane, instead of having to buy another. but its not as easy as the Alpha would be. Your going to have to learn some time though. Handles the wind better also. but it depends on your situation. If the guys at your field dont fly JR then you wont have a good chance on finding an instructor to buddy up with.

Gotta rate this thread a 5 STAR

Learned a lot from all and learned more about planes that I never knew existed. Thanks for your time answering my questions. I really appreciate it :) |
Alpha Trainer
I'm a beginner with an Alpha Trainer. Have about 14-16 flights on it. It's a great package! JR makes a good product. I will tell you, if you plan on using a buddy box and fly at a club, other JR's may be hard to find. I bought another JR tx without the crystal for an additional $50, so my club pro could fly with me.
Most who see the plane are impressed with ease of starting and quiet engine. If you search posts for Alpha, most are very positive. ;) |
SUPER SPORTSTER
THE Super SPortster is put out by Great Planes and in a kit comes both as a 40 size and a 60 size. In the ARF comes as the 40 size. If you want to see it flying see the one I built in my photo page in the Skis over Valley Forge Picture. Tower has them and you LHS will get you one yesterday or sooner.
The DiBo you won't be dissapointed I GARRRRUNTEE  |

I think they just suggested going with a smaller prop if you stick with the 3 bladed one. Can't beat it for the price. Thanks for writing :) |
