i've got a prop
 

hey guys, i'm new here (obviously, being in this thread). just wondering if anyone has any suggestions of what engine/plane to go with this 10x5 prop i got my hands on (master airscrew, if that helps). and perhaps if anyone knows where to get data for propeller geometry etc that would be good too. thing is, i'm studying engineering but all we learn is theory and i'm just keen on trying to apply that to some real life problems.

Wow, a little backward to the usual question. Most say "I've got a plane and motor, what prop should I use?" You can Google prop geometry and theory but your prop would work well on a typical .40 engine on a 40 size trainer plane. This is obviously your first plane and you will want to seek help from an R/C intructor to actually fly it.

Well, since props are cheap maybe you should choose a plane and then choose a prop to go with the plane

Check the prop size on the chart, find and engine to go with it, then look for a model that supports that engine size. Sounds kind of backwards as most people look for a motor , then a prop , after they have selected a model, but you may start something new here..

That prop would suit an engine somewhere around the .30 to .35 size or maybe a little larger depending on how high you wanted the engine to rev. It's suited to a trainer type of model because the low pitch (5 inches) won't give a high airspeed.

As far as propellor geometry goes have a look at http://www.supercoolprops.com/articles.php where you'll find many articles on prop design (and it's Australian so you know it has to be good :D ). And have a look through http://www.bolly.com.au/book/content.html (also Aussie).

I am guessing it is for a nitro motor. (I do believe MA makes props for electrics as well)
Any of the standard size, 40 size trainer will do. By standard size I am talking about 60"ish wing span. The larger 40 size trainers with 70" plus wingspan are happier with a slightly larger engine .46 or so.
You my friend would want a 40 size engine for that prop like OS 40LA maybe. Even a .35 or so if you get a smaller trainer.
I do have to say this is the first time I have seen someone wanting to build an airplane around a propeller :D

i'd get one of quique's 1/3 scale jobs and just keep that 10/5 in my flight box.....if my wife would let me:D
