RE: Sky Fly by Fly Zone

Better late than never....

I have finally started posting some pics of my sky fly control conversion.

More to come.

Thanks!

Very nice. I'd like to see your missing photo of the control board w/control rods
attached. So you cut the tail rudder completely & then used hinge tape? Did you
use the tape all the way across the tail? Did you tape on the top or bottom of the
tail? Do you change over to a lipo battery? If so, which one?

RE: Sky Fly by Fly Zone

using a lipo on the skyfly wouldn't be a good idea unless it weighs as much as the original because the skyfly depends on the battery for weight balance. You could possibly use a lipo if you use a lighter tailboom, but finding one that fits would be hard.

kevinvw1 05-12-2008 02:03 PM

RE: Sky Fly by Fly Zone

I fried a speed controller on another airplane by hooking up a Lipo to it.... so I think I will stick with the NiMh...

The control rods are the only conversion I have made.

The only other thing I may do is increase control surface area and reinforce wing with carbon tape.

I folded a wing on one of my skyflys and the thing fell out of the sky from way up and speared into the dirt. Tailboom broke, front got pretty crushed.
Otherwise it looks repairable. I will probably post pictures of this project soon as well.

There is YouTube video here that shows a modified skyfly that has incredible maneuverability.

RE: Sky Fly by Fly Zone

Very nice. I have a Sky Fly I purchased last winter. It's still in the box.
Along w/a bunch of other planes. I have a Wing Dragon, 3 channel, &
a Begin Air that I pretty much stole on Ebay. Both brand new. Also have
a Phoenix, has 2 different wings you can use. A high wing or a low wing.
Picked up a Corsair FU4 w/a 44" wing @ hobbycity for $100, 4 channel.
The heli thing is taking lots of time to learn. I gotta get some of these
planes up!

I really enjoyed you video & conversion!! Nice job!!

RE: Sky Fly by Fly Zone

i think that trying to use REAL radio gear and doing a brushless and lipo conversion would be one of the best things you could ever do for this plane.

kevinvw1 05-12-2008 05:09 PM

RE: Sky Fly by Fly Zone

Personally I think the SkyFly is what it is.... a $99 entry level airplane that is great for beginners.

If I was going to go with a real radio and brushless/lipo I would do it in an airplane that has more overall potential.

Plus each time I fly my skyfly I always end up craving ailerons...

Happy flying!

Kevin.

RE: Sky Fly by Fly Zone

THEN PUT SOME ON!!!!

The skyfly is no more limited than any other high wing plane.

RE: Sky Fly by Fly Zone

I hear you j.m. but at some point you'd have a plane that was only about 10% skyfly and 90% upgrades at which point it would seem more economical to start with an airplane that already has a real radio and upgrade from there...

I do agree that it ceratinly is fun to push these things and see how far you can tweak them.

Perhaps I could tack on some ailerons and use the rudder servo. I've seen a few 3 channel R/C planes that use aileron instead rudder...
Or add some extra linkage and mix aileron/rudder.... that might require re-inlisting the old fishing line... :)

RE: Sky Fly by Fly Zone

i would like to see a sky fly with real radio gear installed, and balsa servo/ receiver trays. I don't have the time to do it to mine right now, too many other projects (custom DLG, propane injected potato cannon, rc global hawk)

kevinvw1 05-12-2008 08:24 PM

RE: Sky Fly by Fly Zone

Now I'd really like to see pics and/or video of the propane injected potato cannon...

What is a custom DLG ?

j.m. 05-12-2008 08:41 PM

RE: Sky Fly by Fly Zone

DLG= Discuss Launch Glider

Going to be like this:

AUW(all up weight) ~ 9 Oz. 60" wingspan

I just added the missing pics of my skyfly control rod conversion.
Also, added other pics as well.

truthfully, anything about the skyfly is economical for me, as i didn't pay for it. (i love christmas!:D)

RE: Sky Fly by Fly Zone

Could you use Du-Bro .047" push rods instead of the .032"? Would they not
have less flex & more strength?
I just converted the .047" in my Wing Dragon, plus the E-Z connectors on the
servo ends, rudder & elevator. They do make for quick & easy adjustments.
The Wing Dragon mfg. uses the .047" stock. What I also like about the Du-Bro
pushrod kit is the plastic sleeves that goes around the wire. Less friciton & binding.

j.m. 05-26-2008 05:44 PM

RE: Sky Fly by Fly Zone

there's no reason why they wouldn't work, other than a small increase in weight.

high flyer 777 06-15-2008 11:01 AM

RE: Sky Fly by Fly Zone

Just did my modi to the push rods w/Dubro E-Z connectors at both ends of the
push rods. Gonna put in a brushless motor, besc, & lipo for more power, longer
flight times, less battery weight, & I like the quieter sound of the brushless motors.
I won't be using the tricyle landing gear. I think it flies better & landing in the
grass works well.

RE: Sky Fly by Fly Zone

but then you'll have to use a real radio and get servo's and a receiver.

Can't wait to see it!

Yep, I agree. I have a JR SX600 tx w/extra RS600 rx's & also
a DX7 tx w/4 Spektrum 6200 rx's.

wanna sell one of those for cheap?

Sell one of what?

RE: Sky Fly by Fly Zone

Hi guys (and gals?),

I did one more mod to my skyfly. I roughly tripled the size of the rudder and elevator surface area by gluing on a piece of thin balsa and putting some carbon tape on each side.
It makes it pretty snappy on turns and dives.
I will post a pic soon.

Also, I just saw this at TH - http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXMYS2&P=7
I know it's not SkyFly, but if you look at the components you get they cost a lot more separate than in this ARF.
It might be worth buying even if you don't use the plane...
Am I missing something here? It looks like an amazing deal...

Happy Father's day to all dads out there (myself included)!

Kevin.

P.S. I crashed my U-Can-Do 3D... lost site of it behind some trees. Luckily i think all it needs is some glue and a new prop.
I will post pics of this soon also.

RE: Sky Fly by Fly Zone

Regarding real radio, servos, etc in the SkyFly, has anyone seen the SkyFly2?
It looks like it now uses real radio components, plus 7 cell battery.
Looks a bit heavier, but also a bit more wing area.
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...I=LXUVS3**&P=7

Should be interesting.

Kevin.
