Replacement Engine Help
I'm putting together an order to replace my lost trainer. Because of my funds being low I was going to get the OS .46LA. It is out of stock so my next option would be the GMS .46. 2 bucks more. In your opinion what is the better engine? I'm putting it on another Tower trainer.
Thanks for your help. Chopper man P.S. This order does include the airplane finder:D |
RE: Replacement Engine Help
Chopperman . I just bought a GMS .47 with front needle valve . Just finished running a 1/2 gallon of fuel thru it. On the stand , it runs very well after it`s broke in. It was one of the harder starting, tweaking engines ,I ve broke in . After break in , idle , transition and top end are great.
It should pull a trainer well. It is louder than my other .40 sized motors. I also have 2 ST GS 40 that pull my LT-40 and a Tower trainer well. I liked them on trainers so much I bought 2 of them to train others with. $49,99 not a bad price. |
RE: Replacement Engine Help
I would get a St45 or TT 46pro before either of thge other two.

RE: Replacement Engine Help
chopper man , i have just been reading a report on the GMS engines , done by our engine guru here in Australia , and by all accounts itis a very well made engine , develops heaps of power , and is very stable , with little vibration, so i would say yes , the GMS would be a good buy,

RE: Replacement Engine Help
Have you considered the Magnum XLS-46? It is a ball bearing engine for almost the same price as the LA-46. It weighs about 4 ounces more. I have heard good reviews of it and am considering it for my next build.
Edit - I just realized that the GMS and Super Tigre engines that have been recommended are also BB engines. I'm going to have to check those out as well. Good luck |
RE: Replacement Engine Help
I have I just don't know enough about the engine.

RE: Replacement Engine Help
For a .40 size plane, I'd get a BB engine over the .46 LA, or get at least get a .65 LA for it. From what I've heard, the Tower Hobbies or the Magnum .46 engines would work well.

RE: Replacement Engine Help
check out EBAY often they show some good deals. HOWEVER I would only consider NIB or new in the box listings, Older models such as O. S. FSR and FS series engines are common that are fine motors. do your research and DON'T overbid.
Also look at the KANKGE SK 50 it is an ABC ball bearing and is $60.00. I have the 90 and its super (slow to break in and slow to wear out) |
RE: Replacement Engine Help
What about a Super Tiger 45? Great engine.
|
RE: Replacement Engine Help
Super Tiger engines don't have the rear needle adjustment. (Do they??)

ORIGINAL: ro347 What about a Super Tiger 45? Great engine. I see in your models that you have two planes with OS .46 AX's and one with the Super Tigre GS-45. What are the differences? Is the OS worth $50 more than the ST? It would be great to get advice from someone who is running both engines. Thanks |

This order does include the airplane finder:D It's a GREAT engine. It is FAR more powerful than the OS .46LA by a large factor. GMS manufactures Tower Hobbies engines too. Get it, clamp down the carb with a soft vise grip and then tighten the carb hold down screw. This is a must to avoid airleaks, that are the primary cause of problem reports with this engine. Don't change the settings as it comes out of the box. It will start up just fine the way it is. Run a couple of tanks through it at whatever speed it will hold ( usually not full throttle at optimal RPM's out of the box... ). Then carefully adjust the needles. Usually 1/4 turn movement is more than enough to get it right. The needles are a bit sensitive. Run a couple of more tanks through it, alternating the engine speeds up and down. Once down re-tighten all of the cap screws (including the engine head screws!), and carefully retighten the muffler. All of these will work loose after the first runs. Then go fly... You'll find it to be a fairly powerful engine, much more so than the SuperTigre, and stronger than the TT's. BTW: The O.S. are much easier to set up out of the box and are practically ready to run. However the GMS/TH with the above caveats are great bargains. |

RE: Replacement Engine Help
The GMS is a good choice, it does have a slightly larger muffler , but I think thats one of the reasons it runs so well. I got mine with a coupon for 44.95 from Tower. Had to try one out . A freind has one on a trainer and it screams.

RE: Replacement Engine Help
Wow, was this with one of the e-mailed coupon codes?
If so, please post! I'd love to pick up a couple at that price! |

RE: Replacement Engine Help
As ive said before in other posts.....the OS looks nice....but the Super Tiger is an amazing engine.....lots of power....great price. I almost want to say the super tiger feels as if it has more power than the OS> Might not be the case as per the Specs(not sure)....but just going by how one of the planes flew after having both the OS and ST in it. I was skeptical at first being that my first engine was the OS. But I am VERY happy with the ST and am glad I saved myself the $50 bucks. Only thing...I ran 3-4 tanks fo fuel when first started the ST to break in on the ground a little. Oh...and be carefull with the muffler....gets hot as F&^%! Figured that one out on my own-
What will you be putting it in? |

ORIGINAL: OzMo Do a serarch on here RCU for tower codes theres a thread somewhere. The only deal they are advertising right now is $25 off $199, which isn't enough to lure me away from the local hobby shop who is very competitive with Tower's prices, has a huge inventory, and great service. |
