I don't normally reply to the oh-so-funny responses advocating violent acts toward a defenseless animal, but in light of recent news stories regarding animal abuse and violence toward children, I submit the following: would you think it funny if I told you to put your toddler in a bag and chuck 'em in the river because they stepped on your plane? After all, people area always asking on here how to keep their kids from damaging their planes. Say what you will, tell me I need to lighten up, whatever, but I'm just tired of hearing the same jokes over and over again, and it's not funny now, just like it wasn't funny the first thousand times I heard it. Reminds me of an old saying: "The more people I meet, the more I like my cat" (or dog, or other favorite pet, for that matter);).
I agree with you.

I started this thread in hopes to find a solution to a temporary problem. When it comes to animal abuse and violence toward children i'm an advocate totally against it also. If it weren't for my daughter giving the cat to me in the first place to save it from being euthenized, it's days would be numbered. "Trouble" and I will live on happily ever after...planes or no planes.

As far as i'm concerned they can shut this thread down.

thanks for all the "civil" replys

Thinking about going out and rescuing a playmate for "trouble" today. Maybe a 350 lb tiger from the zoo. Nobody will throw Him in the river without a fight!

That reminds me, have you ever stuck a piece of tape on the bottom of a cats paw? Try it!

They make a humane mat called a 'scat mat'. It is an electrified matt that is about four feet long by 1 foot wide. Powered by a 9 volt battery. It gives off a shock to a cat that steps on it. They don't usually do it twice. Maybe one of these on the shelf in front of your model will cure the kitty.

Seemefly.. not good stuff you are posting... even in fun.

When I was single , I had a huge black cat named Sid . He was a great companion , but he also would get bored while I was at work and get himself in to trouble. Solved the problem, by getting him a fish tank full of goldfish and of course made it kitty proof. Worked like a charm.
Never did have a problem with him getting on the counters , which is a pet peeve of mine.
I do apologize if my remarks offended anyone. I was just joking around , and didnt mean any harm .

Some of use consider our pets ,part of our family , lot like our kids , just not as mouthy. lol . Your comments , did not seem to be made as joking around and it pushed the wrong buttons. And it put some on the defencive .

It`s my fault for setting the tone with my first post , I meant it in jest and thats why I used the weird spelling . Things got out of hand and some were offended by some of the postings and rightfully so.

Take a minute and reread your post , it does sound pretty cruel even if meant in jest. Dont beat yourself up over , its called sticking your foot in your mouth . I do it every once in awhile and try not to make the same mistake twice. Foot taste like cow poo! yuck .

Words matter. Words about harming small animals for sport are not acceptable in any company of civilized folk. Some thought they were joking. It was not funny. Some were not joking. There is a special place in hell for them.

The cat is simply young and enjoying life, being a cat. You just need to exercise some access control and discipline yourself. If you have the space and the means, a cat play pen (with roof) with a litter box, toys and water will let the cat do what cats do while you are playing with your no-cats-allowed stuff. A large cat play pen, thoroughly equipped, costs much less than the average flying model.

Wow, I was enjoying reading about the cat mischief. I don't believe anyone was literally meaning to hurt or kill the cat for playing around. I wanted to see him post about, and also see some pics of the cat getting in to that airplane box and really stir up some good stuff. That would teach hungaryandbroke to put his airplane stuff away where the cat can't get to it. You can't tell me it's that difficult. A simple door will do.

There's no reason to harm a playful kitty or to judge people here IMHO.

I root for the cat. If you leave it out, it's fair game for your airplane stuff to get torn up.[sm=spinnyeyes.gif][sm=spinnyeyes.gif][sm=bananahead.gif][sm=bananahead.gif]

It was not a judgement call, just a little bit of discouragment for that type of chatter. Most of the posts, I understand, were made in jest, which I understand and which I participated in myself, but never in a manner that would be harmful in nature to the animals.

Yep, this thread has mostly fun parts, but one or two somewhat negative. I have cats. I travel a lot with work so a dog is just out of the question. Cats are pretty much self caring, needing only food, a place to "go" and a warm spot to sleep. I have several friends that step in from day to day when I am gone so that takes care of the food and litter box issues.. And I love them (the friends AND the cats).

My comments are just a reminder intended to keep it civil and humane... that's all.

Ummm... child abuse? Where did you read that?

First of all no one is advocating violence towards his cat. You said it yourself - they are jokes.

I for one am sick and tired of having to watch what I say because I might offend someone. Get over it.

God Bless, Merry Christmas, I Pledge Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America. If you don't like what I say, don't read it. BUT, you are certainly welcome to reply in any manner you want, because I served my country to make sure you have that right!

BTW, it's "The more I'm around some people, the more I like my dog" by Sonny Burgess and I love that song.

The point here, rwrght, was to get the young man to think about his comments, that were, at least, inappropriate, and not funny. Most of the items posted on this thread were intended to be in jest, but there is nothing funny about making fun about animal abuse.

Words have meaning, no matter what they are or who says them. Even a 14 year old young man who needed to be discouraged about such things. No one is trying to sensure here. We all appreciate a good laugh, but some things are just not funny and not in good taste for such a topic.

Let's not get off on a tangent here. The point was made and, obviously seconded, so lets move on and have some fun with this.

As I said, I woke up one morning with a misaligned horizontal stab from one of my kitties landing on the thing while the epoxy was setting.. still flew straight, well, straight enough for a high wing aerobatic trainer.. (midwest aerobat as reviewed in the AMA Sport Aviator), but sure looked funny from the rear.. :D

RE: Get out of here cat!!!

Some experts say to put a small strip of double sided sticky tape on the edge of a shelf that a cat may jump on. After the second time, they usually avoid it. I used the scat-mat solution, and that does work, I guarantee it. They don't like that little shock they get when they land on it. In fact, after two or three times, you can shut it off and they will still seriously avoid it.. ha..

Another trick is to have a can filled with small rocks. If the cat does bad things (ie.. jumping on the shelf with the new aircraft box), just shake the can. The noise usually scares them away and they remember that jumping on the shelf will result in this noise they don't like.

I found this DVD called Catnip. It is about two hours of non-stop birds, fish, squirrels, that usually gets the cats up and staring at the tube, often pawing the screen to see where these animals are. In one case, it was funny.. the cat looked behind the TV to see where these birds were... funny... and keeps their attention, for sure.

Well he is not a Kitty , but he sure is cute. [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3k2EC3mVgws] Murphy[/link] .
I got Murphy in June after having to put Cruzer , my other Golden, down that had cancer. Broke my heart and said I`d never go thru that again. Then this little red fur ball showed up .

He is 7 months old now and weighs 87 lbs and we are best buds.

I understand his comments were objectionable to some, but several others made similar comments. I just took them as jokes. I realize others are more sensitive to the subject and agree let's get off of that road.

Can the planes be put up somewhere, like on a high shelf, hung from the ceiling, stored in a closet/cabinet?

CGRetired 01-08-2008 09:32 AM

RE: Get out of here cat!!!

Yeah... why not. Cats can jump pretty high.. just keep them out of reach, that's all. I have a back bedroom... more of a junk room right now, that is somewhat of an office, building area, storage room, that all my planes are kept in. The cats are "persona-non-grata" in that room and they know it. They will stand at the door, but not enter when I am in there.

Funny, though, if I close the door, one or two will sit in front (on the other side) and meow until I open it and then just sit there until I come out.

RE: Get out of here cat!!!

hey rwright, did anyone here say you don't have the right to voice your opinion and make jokes even i fwe don't like them? Nope, several people, myself included, just said we're sick of hearing mean cat jokes. I have the same privilege on this forum to say I'm sick of the jokes as you have to complain about political correctness running rampant, as long as it's in a civil manner and no personal attacks are involved. Just remember that. Oh, and I'm not judging anyone either, just calling out what I see.

I, like most bipedal, ground dwelling humans, have no problem with an off-color or offensive joke here and there, but it does bother me when it escalates beyond that. Further, the OP obviously has a cat, and whatever you want to say, it's OFFENSIVE to tell him REPEATEDLY to drown his cat; one joke is enough, IMHO.

The child abuse comment was misunderstood a bit--in my first post I was pointing out that psychologists have repeatedly found a link in individuals between violence towards animals as youth and violence toward people later in life(and yes, there was that little bit about pets being like children, so they should be treated accordingly).

Now that we've all gotten our words in, can we just let the bickering die and get back to productive contributions?

Since I haven't seen mention of it earlier in the thread, and forgive me if it already came up, here's another thought for hungryandbroke: Try putting slightly crumpled aluminum foil on any surfaces or objects you don't want the cat to touch. We broke our two cats of jumping up on the counters in this manner. For some reason (likely that it moves underfoot and makes unpleasant noises) the cats can't stand stepping on the foil. Just lay it across your workbench or on top of your plane, etc, and scrunch it up a little bit so that it makes crunchy noises when you touch it and doesn't completely contact the surface evenly.
