Need help with Hobbico CA hinges
1 Attachment(s)
Hi all, I have a quick question about the hobbico CA hinges that came with my avistar kit. These 1" X 3/4" hinges have a slice through the center along the 1" length. Which way should I install these into the hinge slots. Thanks

RE: Need help with Hobbico CA hinges
The slit in the hinge goes perpendicular to the hinge line. It's there to help the CA wick all the way into the hinge.
Another way to say it, they go in so their long axis is perpendicular to the hinge line. J |
RE: Need help with Hobbico CA hinges
You want to install them with the slit in the hinge perpendicular to the trailing edge of the wing/stabilizer. Slide the hinge in so tha the slit is sticking out. The slits are there to help the CA to wick into the back of the hinge.

Thanks guys much appreciated

RE: Need help with Hobbico CA hinges
I agree completely.
I also drill a 1/16" hole in the hinge slot to help the CA wick easier and use a T pin to center the hinge while you install them. All that said. When assembling my Kadet Senior recently the instructions actually asked you to use that slot, along with a piece of card stock inserted in the slot, to align the hinge. That would put the slot inline with the hinge line rather than perpendicular, go figure. I ignored the instructions and installed them the way I am used to. |
RE: Need help with Hobbico CA hinges
I just worked on my avistar last night :). The instructions manual is so poorly written.
I am using tower hobbies 40 guide as my reference, it's much better with way more info. PS: I was shorted one hinge :(. |
RE: Need help with Hobbico CA hinges
Make sure your hinges are not stuck together. While building my son's Kadet LT-40 the other night I also thought I had been shorted 1 hinge but found that two hinges were stuck together.

RE: Need help with Hobbico CA hinges
I'm 110% sure I was shorted a hinge but that's not that big of a deal. I only have the plumbing left to do on mine. Can't wait.

RE: Need help with Hobbico CA hinges
I have a sheet of CA hinge material just for that reason or if I mess a hinge up or to replace worn or broken hinges when needed.

You know what's funny, my kit was also missing a hinge. Go figure! I had to make a trip to the hobby shop to pick one up. Anyways, I glued all the hinges in and I'm good to go. Can't wait to see how well it flies. Did I mention I dropped an OS .55 in it!
