Engine Choice for Hobbistar 60 MKIII
 

Hi to all!

I am a newbie to this hobby, and as a result knowlege and advise from seasoned vetrans is always needed. On the recommendation of the senior pilots at the local flying club, it was suggested that the choice of a trainer with a semi-symmetrical airfoil, rather than a flat bottom wing design, due to the crosswind conditions at the local field was best. I will be installing the 5th servo in the wing for ailrons/flaprons. But the choice of engine has yet to be determined. I have read as much as my sore red eyes will allow on the forums, and I seem no closer to a decesion, but I am considering the following, Evolution 0.61NX, Super Tiger SUPG61, Thunder Tiger TTT61PRO. I did consider the OS OSM61FX, but at $200.00 here in the Great White North, well ..... I don't mind paying for good quality and performance. I just object to over paying for it. So there it is, what should a newbie do!

I had a Hobbistar 60 for several years until radio failure. I had a MDS 68 on it and thought it was a perfect match.

The airplane had an unbelievable smoothness compared to my LT40.

I wouldn't pay any outrageous price for a new engine.

The only one I have personal experience with is the Thunder Tiger. It was originally on a Hobbistar.

It was a decent running engine but it never had great midrange performance or transition from low to high throttle. Maybe it was a tuning issue on our part, but it was never as good as my brother's Thunder Tiger 46.

I have a (2) Thunder Tiger .61 Pro's, and an Evolution. 61 on an Alpha 60 (and an older OS .61 SF). All are great running engines, hand start easily, and transition with no hesitation. From my experience, you can't go wrong with either the Evolution or TT Pro. Either one will work great on the Hobbistar 60.

Evolution .61NX is a Great engine.

For the money you can't beat the TTPro 61. I have one on a Hobbistar myself. I have a 12/7 on it and just like the everreadi rabbit it just keeps going and going and going. Easy to tune and very reliable
