winterize
 

I do not have after run oil and want to winterize for the season. In my garage I have
2 stroke oil
4 stroke oil
sewing machine oil

Which, if any, should I use instead?

Hey you Michigander just keep flying and you don't have to winterize it. Can't be to cold in Midland.

Non.Just go to walmart an get you some marval mystery oil. Its cheap an works great......Be sure to bring your batteries up. Don't let them set through the winter with low voltage

Look in your garage again and see if you have a bottle
of automatic transmission fluid. (ATF)

One of the best after run oils you can get. Just dont use type "F".
It contains some kind of "friction enhancer" for certain types of
Ford transmissions.

Next time you're passing by Walmart or Autozone, just fork over the couple of bucks for a quart of Dextron III ATF. It a lot cheaper than bearings for an engine. I always keep a quart dedicated only to model aircraft use and keep it stored with the rest of my modeling supplies.

If you put the ATF from your transmission into your model engines, would you put the used oil from your car into your lawn mower too? [X(];):D:D

Take offs and landings in the snow are terrific. A little lighter fluid into the carburator helps the engine get started. Thin gloves keep the fingers from falling off during a 6 minute flight.

I saw a video of a guy flying in a snow storm...he had Tx in a garbage bag...but that is not for me.

You didn't mention the fuel you've been using, no one can give you a definitive answer without knowing. So what's up? Morgan? Don't worry about it, just flush everything out next year. Castor? A gummed up carb takes 15 minutes to clean if it sits 20 years, don't sweat it. Name the fuel and at least 10,000 members (or more) of RCU can give you the answer.

OK. I bought a quart of ATF (DexIII) and poured about 1/2 a lid in the carb and down the glow hole and worked it in.

What do I have to do in the spring to get it back out?

(I am running 10% Coolpower).

If you put a lot of ATF in you can blow it out through the glow plug hole. Remove plug, cover hole with rag, spin engine with starter for a second or two.

Otherwise, start engine, leave glow driver on, rev engine to full throttle for a few seconds or until it stops smoking. Oil is gone and you can remove glow driver.

You are only about 40 miles from me. Go throught there on the way to Toledo. We normally take 20 to Toledo. Will have to go flying sometime.
