foam safe spray paint?
 

is their a foam safe spray paint (can, not airbrush) for polystyrene
im trying to paint a gws tigermoth....any other method that wont kill the weight of the plane?

I used testors model spray paint, and krylon makes a paint called short cuts. Always test on a piece of scrap foam first.

Enamels are typically safe to use on foam...but they can be heavy if you use a lot of it...spray in light coats and as few as possable.

Just to be sure though, I would do a test on a scrap piece of foam before shooting the whole plane/wing, etc.

I repainted my F-27 Stryker with my airbrush, and I used water thinned latex paint. When it dries, it is quite light. You may be able to do it with a brush if you thin it right.

There is a Minwax Polycrylic sold at major harware stores. It is water based. Use this as a base coat and sand with a fine grit sand paper between coats. This will seal the foam and allow you to use most any spray paint. The Testers works well.
I like the Minwax base coat because you can sand off the beer cooler foam look and make a smoother finish.

Every thing you need can be purchased at Lowes or HomeDepoe. I have been building with foam , depron ,and the blue Dow styrene ,and fan fold foam for about years . This is what works for me , not to say it is for everyone,but it seem to give me a very smooth ,slick finish. I start by litely sanding with 400 grit sandpaper and then fill dents scartches with DAP Fast'N Final lightwieght spackling ,do not go over board , remenber you are working with foam and dents ,and scartches will happen the more you handle it .When you are happy with the surface prep for primer ,wipe down with alcohol then tack clothe (do not touch bare handed after this,the oil off you hands will make paint fisheye or orange pill ). I have been using Krylon primer/sealer white #KDQ5149 and I thin it with Armstrong S-195 Underlayment additive,this gives it flexability so you don't get those little hairline cracks in you finish after the first hard landing. Thin the primer 50/50 with the S-195 mix very good with drill mixer ,then I spray 2 lite coats let it flash (dry) about an hour then litely sand with 400 grit sandpaper touch-up if needed ,and you are ready for paint. Wal-mart has craft paint that works pretty good but you can use anything or any kind of paint you what to now that it is primed .I use a LPHV touch-up spray gun (20.00 at Habor Fraight or other type store) and an airbrush , spray cans don't work very well because the propellent melts the foam. You can use the paint in the spray can just not the can ,take the paint out of the can.This might seem like too much work but the finish and comments at the field will be worth it. Cap231ex

Good paint to use on foam is Krylon Kids Tuff. Non toxic and the propellant won't attack foam. Excellent coverage and no primer or sealant needed.</p>
