VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
Anyone have this plane or flown it?
http://www.vqwarbirds.com/products/aircraft/p51d.html http://www.vqwarbirds.com/images/air...vqdagored1.jpg Seems like a class looing plane and suppose to do 100mph if over sized engine is used Richard |
RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
Just started putting mine together.

RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
wat retracts did you use? how many servos are needed if you use the VQ mechanical retracts? seems a class looking plane...any photos of yours?
|
RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
I went with the mechanical retracts from vq. I've not had any luck geting the retracts install. Having a hard time getting them to lock in the up position. so with that said I'm not very far along. 4 standard servos and 1 retract servo. I'm kinda losing interest. May have to put it aside for awhile and then go back to it.

RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
Recently started putting mine together too, Got the retract problem solved though, The blocks they supply are not thick enough and the spring on the gear is hitting the bay before it locks up, I used plastic but ply would work just as well, Use 1/4 ply and cut some new blocks, 1/4 inch is just enough to give it clearance and let them lock, and won't have the gear sticking out of the wing (actually makes them flush with the bottom of the wing) I'll hopefully get some time to work on it this weekend. What engine are you planning on using. I have 2 to use on hand. I'm going to use a Magnum 70 to start, then switch it with a YS 63 I've had on the shelf for a few years. It needs a little work so the Magnum will hold me over until I get the YS repaired. Should be quick with the YS, I almost went with a fast 2-stroke, but a mustang just wouldn't sound right on a low fly-by with the gear up.

Thanks for the info on the gear. I'll be going with your solution and see if that takes care of my problem. I have renewed hope:D I'm using the Magnum 70 4 stroke. |
RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
What are your opinions on the VQ Mustangs? How is the construction, light and cheap or typical ARF? The Dago Red is a nice looking aircraft and will be more visible than the typical silver Stangs.

RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
Does the kit come exactly as its pictured...like the decals/covering in the pic above i posted? I was thinking of going 2 stroke...would it be faster on 2 stroke? Or 4 stroke better for the warbird noise?
|
RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
It comes just like the picture and almost every thing is on the covering with the exception of the number on the rudder needs to be put on and all those little words on the side of the cowl also need to be put on, The covering looks nice and seems pretty light weight, but it is actually a sticky back type covering so if there are any larger repairs a recovering might be needed because I don't know if iron on covering would stick to it or not. It does look like a good quality ARF and seems to be built pretty well and better than a lot of other ARF's Ive dealt with. I think this is going to be a fun plane and be a attention grabber at the field, Only problem is 3 of us got them to do a little formation flying so the attention will be divided LOL (OK so I like the attention LOL) Hopefully I'll have some time this weekend to do a little more on it, all I have so far is the wing together and retracts in. As far as what type engine, I think either would be nice, However the wing is not really a speed wing and is pretty thick so to make it compete against say a SunDowner 50 ARF or a GP Revolver, It just won't compete but this is a cool looking sport model and should still get some good speed but won't break any speed records is all.

Dauntae,
Did you add 1/4 on top of the wood that they provide with the retract? I was happy with everything accept the firewall. I though that was a little weak. This weekend is supposed to be nice so I'll be out and will not have time to work on it. |
RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
No, I replaced it with 1/4 inch, The wood they supply is a little thicker than 3/16 but not quite enough for the gear to clear the floor when retracted, The 1/4 puts it just enough without the gear sticking out of the wing.

hmmm might order this with a magnum .52 2 stroke :D wont fly it for a month or two but will be a project while i learn 3d tricks and prob crash my funtana

RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
asked the guy at vq warbirds and he had it clocked at 103mph coming out of run with a .46 engine...so with a .52 it should shift hopefully

RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
forgot to ask...what are these magnum engines like? cheap and nasty? should i just buy an os 55ax instead?

RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
I also have a Magnum .91 and a .70 and recently got a .52 that I have not run yet, Got great deals on the .70 and .52 with Hobby People sales and they have run great so far, I've had the .91 for about 4 years and I got it used and it still runs great and gets flown a lot in the summer.

RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
I am trying to set up the retracts on my Dago Red. They lock up and down but in the down position the servo chatters. When I operate each gear by itself the servo doesn't chatter. The rods are not hitting each other in the down position either. Any ideas?
Thanks |
RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
are the rods binding? i got mine fitted and workin no problem using the tips above with diff wood, etc. dont bind at all through the range. seems like the rod is binding and pushing against the servo causing it to fight against it

Well I know that I know better than to keep the junk that they include. Take a look at the engine mount and tell me what you think. The sides were straight before I mounted the engine. Should I replace it? I think this will be the last ARF that I'll buy unless it is a Great Planes or top Flite. What good does it do you if you have to spend more money replacing all of the hardware. Anyway please tell me what you think.
Thanks |
RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
I'm putting together the P51B and my mount did the same thing, I had down thrust, up thrust, left/right thrust, guess it depended on the angle you looked at it, so I got a dave brown mount and it looks alot better, didn't need shimed
has anybody had problems with the scale tail wheel? |
RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
I just bought one, still have to open the box.......
|
RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
The scale tail wheel was not that hard to set up and works well, I didn't bother with the mock tail gear doors but the scale location works well and it ground handles pretty well too.

RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
Hi all !!!
I was wondering if I could fit some smaller servos (with the same torque) instead of the standard ones to gain some weight. And also, I was thinking of using 2 for the ailerons to help for shorter landings on crappy fields. (actually we have a corn field 6 foot high just at the bottom of the landing track). So, for ex: 1x 3001 replaced by 2x HS-5085MG in ailerons 1x HS-5085MG for rudder (3.5 kg) 1x HS-5085MG for elevator 1x HS-85MG for thottle. And a regular "retract". Maybe as well a 2S lipo + ubec (to gain weight s well), but dunno if it's really a an advantage (need balance charge). And it will be powered by an OS55AX + Turbo-Jett in cowl muffler. |
RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
Actually the Dego slows down real nice without flaperons without any tip stalling at all, it looks fast but really handles like well mannered sport plane and on my first landing it slowed down like a trainer and was on the ground at a stop half way down the runway, so flaperons are not needed at all IMHO

RE: VQ Warbird P51 Dago Red
Good to know that !
The announced weight is a bit "too high" for a plane that size, so I was a bit uncomfy with the idea. |
