RE: field stand?
I came across an article about stands in Aero Modeling published in UK I think. It showed a great stand made from an Black & Decker "workmate" those folding workbenches. I think thats the way Im going to go. You drill holes in the wood surfaces for PVC pipes to custom fit to your plane. More holes, more custom fittings. I will look deeper and find out more info.

RE: field stand?
There must be over a hundred variations of the B&D Workmate. Some are more substantial than others.
I have seen three different Workmates with model adapters clamped in the jaws. All three worked very well. |
RE: field stand?
The workmate that I have is much heavier than what I want to haul to the field. It does, however, make a great base for the engine test stand when I want to test or break-in an engine at home.

Okay. No laughing at the quality of the workmanship. But the idea is sound. I put this together in about a half an hour. It works great and fits in the trunk of my car. I used this for breaking in two engines. No, the force of the prop doesn't push the table over, but if I were to fabricate one, I would put some sort of foot brace out in front to be safe.

RE: field stand?
I have one of them tables but it's my wifes for when we have something going on so thats out for me,and I'm not saying anything about the ducktape job:D j/k looks like it would work.
|
RE: field stand?
My first walker had aluminum crutch tubing for the cradle. REALY did not work. Some of my buds came up with the PVC pipe fitting cradles so I scrapped the crutch crap and never looked back. My first field stand was a card board box and duck tape.[sm=stupid.gif]
I didn't give a rip I was haveing to much fun! |
RE: field stand?
I also have a PVC stand, it works flawlessly but I need to put my wooden tool box over its base, otherwise the wind will fly my plane with out giving any advice.

RE: field stand?
At our club, We had a few safty stands, however weather got to a couple of them. I just went out and got all the lumber and built 2 of them for the field. I didnt relize there were plans availible. I went by eye and pictures of the current ones we have.
I am new to the club fall last year and have only been in the air twice with my trainer but I figured this would be a gift I could give the club that would help everyone and last a while. Now I gotta paint them up and make em pretty. Ill post pics when the sun comes out...there on my back porch still :) |
RE: field stand?
I'm sure they will get used
|
RE: field stand?
Oh for sure!.
We destoyed two older ones as they were not safe after winter and these two will replace those. Now I wont have to feel like I should have the old broken down one LOL. I bought way too much wood too LOL. I have probably $15-$170 total into the supplies I bought. I wanted to build 3 of these. One extra one for my house with removable vertical braces so i can start my helicopter on it without issue. I looked at my lumber pile and realized that I over estimated what I would need. Oh and I gotta go get outdoor paint tommorow to finish these. |
RE: field stand?
I have one at home also that I use when I want to run a engine on a plane
The first ones we built in 2002 were made of untreated lumber and painted. They are still in use. There are kept inside during the winter months. Mine at home is kept inside except when used and is painted. We made some in 2005 of treated wood. They are not painted. They are at all the flying fields in this area |
RE: field stand?
Thats cool! I def. wanted one for at home. I have 40 acres of almost all open land we own behind my house. We will be putting in a runway (safety fence and mow even lower) later this year. I started a hobby shop last year (in our convenient store) and building the r/c truck track now. Then on to the air field. Now I will just need my trainer LOL :)

RE: field stand?

RE: field stand?
Nice job
|
RE: field stand?
Thanks! Like I said, I didnt realize there were plans out there for these. I am going to make a couple more with the detailed plans I saw on this thread. You can never have enough of these things at the field!
I still have to paint and a couple more things to add but I was happy with the first turnout. |
RE: field stand?
Be careful with the cross braces on the original plans. They are way off in dimension and only serve as a cut to fit at assembly piece of wood.
These work out much better with some all weather wheels on the big end |
RE: field stand?
Hi w8ye
Those dimensions that are off are not on my plans by chance, are they? See my plans at: http://www.wilsonrc.org/download.php?view.9 I have had three people in our club build Engine Starting Safety Stands from my plans and I asked them to check the dimensions and let me know. So far no problems have been reported. We asked all of our club members to collect wheels from junked lawnmowers for use on our stands. Unfortunately the worst set of wheels ended up on the prototype stand that I built. Where is the justice? |
RE: field stand?
the bad dimensions were on the August 2002 AMA plans published in Model Aviation.
The "bad" dimensions don't hurt any thing. One just has to cut the cross brace to fit at assembly. The cross brace for the "giant plane" stand is also different from the standard one |

RE: field stand?
Hi again w8ye
Until you mentioned it earlier, I was not aware that the Engine Safety Starting Stand design originated in England. I thought the design was started at http://www.meroke.com/safetybench.htm . When I saw that some of the stands we had built, from the plans we had seen in the AMA magazine and at meroke.com (I think), were in need of repair every few years, I studied the plans and saw were a few changes to the basic design would make our stands much stronger and hopefully, last longer. I contacted a fellow at meroke.com and gave him my suggestion and asked if he could have the plans changed. Well, he did not see a need for changes, and I certainly could understand that. That is why I decided to have my improvements drawn up. There are many ways of designing something, and thru evolution, the basic design is frequently improved. Thanks again for your information about the origins of the design. |
RE: field stand?
my stand above is crap LOL. I just started to think...HEY Mabey I should see if the plane sits good on this. To my surprise, The front wheel on a trike is too far forward to stay on in my design. This was resolved by extending the center plank about 6 inches. Stupid me, But Now I have some great designs to go by thanks to you guys. My next ones will be nicer!

RE: field stand?
I listed one for sale in the classifides today. I just thought I would see if anyone wanted to buy any ready made ones. I am a stay at home dad that is just trying to stay busy.
