field stand?
Does anyone have any ideas on a portable field stand?my old club had pitstands but it does not look like the new club where I am going to fly has them[&o]

RE: field stand?
In another thread here, someone showed a stand built out of a used walker. I was quite lightweight and folded flat. I don't recall who it was or where the thread was. Another starting point would be an inexpensive folding saw horse.

RE: field stand?
One folding sawhorse, this could work just gotta come up with some kind of craddle for the top.

Hi cowboydfk
Why not build a stand like in this photo and donate it to your new club. I can give you the plans if you are interested. The last time I checked on the material cost it was about $60.00 purchased from Lowe's. Our club has about ten of these stands. We like to call then Engine Starting Safety Stands to emphasize the safety part of using them. |
RE: field stand?
Thats the stand my old club has, they are great.I'm going to be joining a new club and from pic's on the fields websight it looks like everyone is set up on the ground[&o]If I built one and set it up I know when I got there someone would claim it as their own and being the new guy there would just be problems.I am going to have to sacrifice not having a stand for a bigger closer club I guess.

RE: field stand?
i was thinking about building my own stand because of other club members Hutzpa, asking if they could use my stand while im flying.
this sawhorse or similar maybe the base for it, its cheap, folding and can be thrown away when dirty. you need to add U shape wood pieces for holding the airplane and weight to withstand a pulling airplane. http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...word=saw+horse http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...6278000P?mv=rr Alex |
RE: field stand?

RE: field stand?
Hi twostroke and others
The stand you show can be very dangerous. If the engine happens to be at full throttle when it starts, it will pull the stand over right into who ever started the engine. Sure, the engine should be at idle when you start it, but accidents do happen. It happened to me again just a few weeks ago. Our club has ten of the Engine Starting Safety Stands. It can be downloaded free from our club website at http://www.wilsonrc.org/news.php Click on the Download section at the left. Our stand is an improved design of the one shown at the Meroke.com site. If there are any questions about this Engine Starting Safety Stand please post them right here. |

RE: field stand?
Hi rgm762
If you build my stand and like it comment on it here and post a photo of it. I'm heavy into safety because I have seen many accidents. I see no need for others to have to experience accidents in order to start the engines in a safer manner. Did you read about an accident someone just reported at this site? Tragic. |

Build this but add a 45 degree elbow somewhere below the 4 way to narrow the stance and add height, otherwise the base if you build taller would be silly wide, bolt the base to some rough cut 2x4 scraps (can often get them free from lumber yards, lowes, home depot, etc) that are around the same length as the base. Paint them a decent color. Make 6 and leave them at the club for everyone to use. If you want it portable, just drill holes and bolt the joints with wingnuts, then break it down and transport.

Here is the walker field stand $15.00 tops and one short evening to build
CAUTION THESE CAUSE OLD FART JOKES!!!! But boy do they work great.:):D My OS 90 FX won't pull it over when the field box is on the shelf. DON"T RUN THE ENGINE WITHOUT THE FIELD BOX ON THE SHELF[X(] Scedule 40 1" for the fittings DO NOT GLUE THE CRADLES TO THE Ts, this way you can change the cradles for multiple uses. Battery pack shrink tubbing over the pipe insulation would work well, much better than tape. |

RE: field stand?
thats too bad about your new club not having any stands. thats very unsafe. I think you need to make a motion at your next meeting and get the club started on building them. get 4 or 5 guys and an assembly line and they could build 6 or 8 of Villa's stands in no time. it would be well worth it. if you have to, have some kind of fund raiser to get the materials

These are the stands we use. They work great. It really is a small investment for your safety.

RE: field stand?
I have been receiving PMs requesting the design for my Engine Starting Safety Stands. Here is how I answered the last one:
"My plans can be downloaded, free, from our club site at http://www.wilsonrc.org/news.php Just click on Download at the left of the web site. If you do build them please comment on the stands at the site you saw it in and perhaps include a photo. I am very deep into safety after seeing many accidents. Most people have no idea how dangerous our models can be. I am trying to get more clubs to build Engine Starting Safety Stands. Your help in getting the word out is much appreciated. I had a ball designing it and building it. Our club first built about 8 of the stands designed by a club in NY ( Meroke.com). After a few years the stands started to fall apart. I took it on as a design project and saw that there were some areas that needed improvements. I offered the improvement to the original club that had designed the stand, but I could not get anyone interested in changing it. Probably people had moved on. So I put it out myself and call it my design, but giving them credit when ever I remember. Well, that is the long story. I'm glad that you recognize that there is indeed a severe safety problem out there. Spread the word whenever you can. " |
RE: field stand?
We have one of those semi-permanent movable stands at my field. I second the idea of bringing it up at a club meeting. I know the need for another one were brought up at our club meeting we would find a way to make it happen. As I said, we have one and it doesn't get used very often. Most of the fields I've been to have at least one, if not many. Others have regular tables and permanent forks in the ground to hold the stab of the plane, etc.

RE: field stand?
Hi all
As our clubs safety NAZI I really like the wooden stands and plans. Use them by all means. They are the safest way to go. There are other good methods such as the steel twin stake in the ground holder and others. I have seen tables with rope loops for the tail wheel. I have seen a guy fly his plane directly into his abdomen using one...tail wheel came off. DON"T LET ANYONE STAND IN FRONT OF A RUNNING AIRPLANE. Go hold it for him and let him know he should ask for help (and at our field is actually required to ask.) As far as "portable" stands they need weight to hold a running plane. Usually a flight box will do the trick BUT BE SURE PLEASE:D |
RE: field stand?
our club has voted to build some, I'm going to modify the wire spool we have, but we perfer the ones like like villa's, now with plans we'll get em built
we also have a couple of guys with th "portable" stands and someone HAS to hold also and I still get nervous |
RE: field stand?
Our one stand is actually made of PVC with a sheet of plywood, now that I remember... Definitely not enough to restrain my planes by any means. I will work off the table but restrain my planes' wings using metal posts wrapped in pipe insulation and driven into the ground.

RE: field stand?
Well I checked out the new field today,it's a big field but the way they got things set up is kinda strange like no pilot barrier (orange fence) and the landing aproch is something I gotta get used to when I fly there and guess what no plane benches [&o] there was only one guy out today and I ask him about it and he said he liked the idea and brought up the subject and the other members shot the idea down so what this guy did was put pvc pipe in the ground and he takes two pieces of copper pipe with padding and sticks them in the pvc to keep the plane from going foward but you still got to work on the ground. There is only about 30 members in this club so waiting for a channel Don't look like much of a problem, most of the guys just fly on saterday. For now all I got to do is get a park permit for the courthouse, cost about $10.00 for that and I get a key to open the gate,if things go ok and I like the club I will join.
