RE: how to keep rubber diverter on muffler ?

alot of the mufflers now have grooves on them, so when a extension is secured to the pipe end its not going to slip off, last weekend I crashed one of my planes with a OS 46AX the extension was still firmly secured to the pipe, evn though the prop, and spinner, was busted, and the engine was covered in dirt.

only time I have had trouble with them staying put was with the muffler that has a smooth end with no ridges then there isn't any thing to grab firmly on to, a ridge of JB Weld on the end would have been handy to hold the diverter on in that case.

if you tighten the tie wraps down and give it a bit of a tug and it doesn't come off then it's going to stay put.

how does one compute 15% loss in power, this will probably start another round of debate of course.

I havent lost any exessive amount of power from having a deflector on the muffler, seems like some engines are more sensitive to a 1 1/4" piece of tubing, I use them on 2 and 4stroke engines

I wonder if the power reduction is that much? I know it is some, but not sure how much. I do like using the rubber defectors to reduce some of the gunk on the airplane and it tends help muffle the sound. One thing it did that helped recently was illustrate to me that the muffler through bolt had loosened and it was pointing not where it usually points. Also noticed some blackened oil, thought the motor was cashed. Once tightened up, I was good as new.

mowery1, make sure to tighten it using a needle nose pliers. I find that if I grab the loose end with a needle nose pliers and twist (curl) the pliers against it, I can really get it tight. I like to wick CA between the deflector and the muffler. Seems to hold for me.

Good grief people ! Go to Napa or O Reiley's and get small heater hose clamps.

maybe that is what this guy needs, but I've found the Zip tie to be plenty strong.

I have a Saito 100. The exhaust tube on the muffler is tapered. No amount of zip ties would keep it on. Clean or not. I put a ridge around the exhaust with JB Weld and had no more trouble. The newer Satio's have a muffler with a ridge machined on it. Seems like Saito realized the problem and corrected it.

AGAIN.... I also JB weld a lip on the exhaust tip. Works great and an easy, secure fix.

If it slips off, and you try to put it back on without cleaning the inside of the diverter, well, that's just like not cleaning the muffler port. So, make sure you clean both the muffler port as well as the inside of the diverter before putting it back on.

As I said earlier, I have them on my planes and have never had one fall off.

I've broken one or two from un-natural causes.. [:@] but I've never had one fall off.
