Hey Everyone I am still on my trainer and have a few flights done. The reason I am asking so early is if its a Kit it will give me time to build it. I am also considering ARFs. ARFs are maybe preferred.

I would like to go into fast plane genre where its not a stunt plane like the edge, extra, etc, But I dont really know like a racing plane that has good control and very stable but maybe has the potential for a little speed. Also with this I think I should be able to fight 10mph wind better, am I wrong for assuming this?

For a second plane for my son I got him a Duraplane Aerobat. This plane is capable of high speed and still has a great degree of stability. It is not the prettiest plane out there but it is still tough enough to handle those rough landings. Speed is something you can have with most airplanes with the change of the prop. So all you have to do is choose one that you like and get used to flying it, then start adding more pitch to the prop until you fill the need, the need for speed.

I saw a Duraplane at my field the other day.........not very pretty but home depot has most the parts ;)

I heard that it flys very heavy and with a dead stick super hard to get onto the ground.

My second plane was a Tower Hobbies Kaos 40 kit. It definitely moves quickly with a 46FX. Once you get real good on your trainer and if, and only if, you have an instructor willing to help then the Kaos is a great second plane. Since you want an ARF here are some in the $100 - $160 price range:

Tower Kaos ARF - $119
GP Big Stik 40 - $109
CG Tiger 40 - $159

Those should all give you a good rush when your ready!

Super Sportster ARF (about $130 to $140). Fairly quick, fairly aerobatic, but still slows down well for landing, and it LOOKS good. :D

the 3 i know to fly the best for a 2nd plane, 4*40 is the most popular, the easysport, Ive owned, flew great, it was my 2nd plane after a year of flying a trainor.

Kaos, big stik, Sportster, 4*, all good planes. If you can build, you should build it. It will last longer. I have found that ARFs tend to not be as strong as one I would build myself. Takes a little longer, but not much.

Dura planes fly great, with the right cg will land dead stick no problem.

Sportster, Kaos, or Goldberg Tiger2. All great second planes that will fly fast at throttle and then slow down nicely to land. I like a little bigger so the Tiger2 would be my choice. It has a remarkable speed range and is very earobatic capable.

Not sure if you are flying electric or glo.

If electric is an option, here are some thoughts for 10 MPH+ wind

Zaggi flying wings have the reputation for being good in the wind. The 480 is pretty quick.

The Twin Jet is both fast and also good in the wind - another delta wing type.

My Aerobird does pretty good up to 12-15 MPH winds, but is not fast.

Depends on your experience. I built a Big Sitk 60 from scratch in about 5 nights working 3 to 4 hours a night and one weekend. Depends on how fast you build. Kits can be pretty quick. I can put a wing together in an evening on most sport type planes, and the fuse and tail surfaces in another. Sanding and getting things prepped usually takes another, sometimes 2 if it is a really rounded fuse. Covering takes the longest, and then the radio install takes a full night usually.

Depends on how fast you build and how long you have to spend in the instructions.

Invest $20 and build the SPAD Deboniar. If you want more speed and maybe some acrobatics, just make the wings with less or no dihedral.

If you want something not quite aerobatic but with speed, look at the great planes lancair. Its a very nice looking plane, and has "speed".

I thought the same thing when I first stumbled across them a month ago. I looked at them and thought there's no way these planes can fly as well as they say. So I invested $12 on materials and a combined time of about one day building one to see for myself how it would do and boy was I surprised. It flies great.

I appreciate a good looking and well built balsa airplane as much as the next guy; but I also like having something that I can just throw in the truck and go fly.
