whats the purpose of the resistor ? what does it actually do to the battery?

Tinman,
The resister is there to "load" the battery. The actual load isn't that critical. The reason for the load is that Nicad (and maybe other types?) batteries will show a bogus high voltage reading when no current is being pulled from them. But as soon as you pull even a little current, the voltage drops to the "real" value.

In other words, with out the load, the battery will always show "full" even if it's actually quite "empty".

thanks montague !!! this site is the best!!! im new to this just got my trainer finished but iv been working out of town and training at the field is on thursdays im going to the field tomorrow hopefully someones there so i can finally fly.
im still needing a volt meter this proves i can buy a regular cheapo one that can get banged around and i dont have to worry bout it getting broke as much !!
