ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
I have a size .60 k & b that wants to run backwards. when it does run forward it seems sick and weak. Anyone know what is up with this?

RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
What carb. does it have on it  sounds like it is running rich. Let hand rotation to run.

RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
Wanting to run backwards is a common thing, My 46ax does it all the time. Mine does it when I prime it to much before I start it. Yours sounds a little rich like Live Wire said, try leaning it out a little and see if that helps.

RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
Usually it's a sign of overpriming but have you run this engine before? I'm not very familiar with K&B engines but I believe there was a reverse rotation crankshaft available for some. If it wants to run great in reverse then that's the likely culprit :).

RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
Every engine I have owned has done that at some point, specially when using a chicken stick. Does seem to happen when the engine is over-primed or running very rich.
If it does that, normally a quick jab on the throttle sorts it out. I have come into the habit of starting the engine by grabbing the spinner and then smartly flipping the engine in the opposite direction (Clockwise) Works like a charm and my engines never start backwards like that. Works on my .46 two strokes all the way up to my .91 four strokes. |
RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
Thank you all very much. All answers seem to point to a rich mixture.I will check it out. Thanks again!

RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
K&b did offer a reverse crank for this, the .40 and the veco .19 .Did you buy this used?
|
RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
To think about it  Clarence did reverse a couple 60's;)
|
RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
yes this was bought used

RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
are you sure is not pusher engine??? i know is a stupid question...but maybe it can happen.
|
RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
I have never heard of a pusher before but I am new at this.hmmm

RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
You never said which carburator you have. can you take a pic. of the motor and then we can tell. They put out the standard and the pumped engine and the carb's are different.

RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
You can get a reverse crank for the K&B 61. I know, I have one.

Larry K http://www.mecoa.com/kb/ is the present manufacturer and "authority" these days and could help you sort out the engine if it comes down to that point. Current Perry pumps and carbs can be found at http://www.perrypumps.com/prod01.htm |
RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
Just remove the carb and look at the crank to tell if it is a reverse rotation crankshaft. The crank opening will occur while the piston is moving up, usually about the point that the piston covers the exhaust. End of speculation.

RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
I WILL CHECK THAT. THANK YOU.
|
RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
I will try to get a picture of the carb and send it to you.It looks strange. It has a plate on the side about the size of a dime and a screw on the outter edge of it that does not seem to do much. None of my other engines have this set up.

RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
That sounds like a Perry carb. Very good design at a time when many carbs were difficult to adjust and perform well. Does it look like the ones on this web page:
http://www.perrypumps.com/prod01.htm There is a small volume inside the carb that holds fuel, so it can run for a while when the fuel is disrupted from the fuel tank. And I belive there is also an internal fuel filter, which can clog up with conjelled oil. So a careful cleaning may solve your problems. It also depends on an O-ring or two. It's been a very long time since I've had one apart. There was an article on the care and cleaning in RCM if you can find it. RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
ok that is not a veco it is a K&B sportster that has a remote needle valve that is not shown in the pictures. If you are just connecting the fuel tank to the fuel nipple on the carb you have no way of requlating the volume and it is real rich.you need to get the remote needle

RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
I noticed in the picture the engine is stamped "Made in USA".
That's sadly a sure sign of the age of this engine. |
RE: ENGINE RUNNING BACKWARDS?
For sure, it could be weeks old..... :D

ORIGINAL: SushiSeeker I noticed in the picture the engine is stamped ''Made in USA''. That's sadly a sure sign of the age of this engine. as far as the engine goes, the "dime" looking thing on the side is the low speed mixture screw. it only move 1/8" either way from center. it controls an eccentric that regulates the venturi on the carb |
