RE: Rant about getting started
I kinda get the OP's point and I kinda don't. I can see that itcan be daunting for someone new to pitch up at 'a club, hat in hand and ask for help. I taught myself to fly on an abandoned airfield, not because I'm a smart@ass but it was the only way to go (no RC clubs for 100miles). Since then I have moved onto my 4th plane and have moved to the city and more clubs. When I visited the clubs I got the impression that it was a real old boys club and no one actually wanted anything to do with me. If it wasn't for a friend who was the lhs salesman and club trainer I would never have gotten a chance to fly even once. I had to ask one of the guys to get a chance on the frequency board because before I came he was the only one on that channel. I do get the impression that the younger lads are more willing to help than older dudes, probably because they havent forgotten what it feekls like to start out alone. Anyway, I think everone should make a point of making newbys feel welcome. I mean just in general be nice and help as far as you can ;).
To the OP good luck and I hope you find the joy your looking for! Be pasient and listen to the advice given even if it sounds negative, you will get the help you need. Voice your issues and questions with your club and make yourself a part of the group. Don't get fedup if someone says no, not now. Most importantly have fun!:D Cheers! |
RE: Rant about getting started
That brings up another thing that new pilots really should try to do, which is to make an effort to befriend established club members. Yes, it should be the other way around, but this is generally an introvert's hobby and truthfully those guys don't recieve anything for trying to help you. If you will introduce yourself and take an interest in what they are doing, then they will become more tolerant of you. Remember, it's new guys that mess up and cause problems most of the time. Show them that you are a new guy that they actually want around.
