Split Elevator with One Servo
 

Hi, I am building a plane with two seperate sides the the elevator. Each side will have its own control horn and rod. I will only have one elevator servo.

I want to use a solid connection to the servo, like a z-bend.

How can I attach two control rods to one servo with a solid connection, like a z-bend?

Pics or links to a product would be helpful.

you will need a wooden dowel. the dowel will be your push rod. At one end of the push rod you will drill two holes through the dowel about 1/4 in apart vertically. into each of these hole you will insert a small length of solid metal push rods with the threaded connector on the other free end. the end that is inserted into the wooded push rod will have been cut to length bent 90 degrees so that as it fits into the hole the rest of the pushrod will flow down the wodden pushrod. theses two metal pushrods should end up fairly equally in length and should extend far enough from the wooden pushrod so that they can be attached with no stress to each of the elevator control horns. Securing the pushrods to the wooden pushrod has several options like wrapping wire or dental floss that has been glued to the metal and wooden push rod. just wrap from before the metal pushrod enters the wooden one until the bottom of the wooden pushrod is reached or you can use my favorite method of using shrink wrap to secure the pieces together. The other end of the wooden pushrod is similar except you are only using one metal pushrod to attach to servo

Thank you. For the Sullivan part, how to the control rods attach? If I have the threaded end of a control rod down at the control horn and the non-threaded end up at the servo, how to that attach to those two springy things? thanks

You'd probably have to use soldered on threaded couplers for the ball link ends. You fit them over the plain end of the control rod and solder them on.

The springy things are glass reinforced nylon sleeves that have either 2-56 or 4-40 female thread.

Just bind and solder a short length of 4 40 threaded rod to the two push rode and you have the joiner. (see pic)

An elevator bell crank. It's very similar to using the dual ball links, but once it's installed I find that it's easier to adjust if needed. Just my opinion.

Another great solution I have seen is to bring one rod off the servo and two off the elevator halves and join them all in a set-screw stop collar. Add a second one for a margin of safety.
