your going to basicaly get two opinions on this plane, one is that it is not a good trainer, and the other is that it is a good trainer. I learned with this plane with no problems, however DO NOT try and teach yourself with this plane, best advice I can give you is to find an instructor and get their opinion, if the instructor subscribes to opinion 1, you'll have problems, it's just some people don't believe you can learn with this plane

I have seen a few of these aircraft fly at the local club, and the general consensus is that it is not as great as a "proper" trainer. It lacks any self righting ability, and is also a taildragger - landings and takeoffs will be more difficult.

If you are planning on learning by yourself, forget the Mustang. When (not if) you crash, you could do major damage. Get a smaller glow trainer, such as a Carl Goldberg Eaglet, or Sig Kadet Mk2.

For learning to fly a glow trainer, you really should join a club - at least so someone can look over your aeroplane and test fly it.
From my personal experience, I think the Sig Kadet Senior is the best trainer. It looks great - rounded forward fuselage, real windows, and a fibreglass cowl. It is also a good size (80 inch wingspan) so it is easier to fly. (trust me - smaller models are harder!)

Have fun and enjoy the hobby!

The P-51 PTS is more of a 3rd plane than it is a trainer. However, there are low-wing airplanes with high wing areas that make great trainers. You certainly can't go wrong with a high-wing.

GraemeEllis hit it good with ( Smaller doesn't always mean Easier ).

Yep you will get two schools of thought on this one.
If you strip ALL of the extra stuff off they are OK flyers. Not self righting as previously mentioned. And complicated to repair. AS MENTIONED BEFORE you will crash. Thats why trash bags are standard equipment ;)
Look up at the top of this forum for trainer recomendations. Almost any cheap basic 40 size trainer will do well. Smaller can be a little hard to see at times. (you may be able to see it fine but the instructor needs to be able to see it too. My favorite is the Sig LT 40 with an os .46 engine. If you show up with the Sig LT 40 as oppossed to the p51 you'll get more smiles from the instructors, seriously. I would NOT buy any radio gear until I knew what is compatible to the instructor's. GOOD LUCK

If you would like a more appropriate low wing trainer (2nd plane), try the Carl Goldberg Tiger 60 on low rates.  It is very gentle and lands like a trainer.

Thank you

I started out with the original p-51 pts. Personally I wish I had started out with something easier. I now fly the sig lt-40 while the mustang hangs from my ceiling. Definitely get an instructor with this plane and I learned a lot from him. I replaced the mustang 2 times before I finally put it in storage.

I have taught with this airplane....it is not a good trainer......it would make a good second airplane....but as a trainer there are better airplanes out there...

Nice little plane after you remove all the PTS crap but as a trainer?? Well, there are a lot better options out there. As a trainer I thought it was junk and would stick with a normal, cheap high wing.
