ORIGINAL: bbrown2828 well i am finshed here are some pics That Stanley toolbox is the base model for a number of custom boxes in our club, and I'm thinking of making one for myself rather than use my bike trolley. A couple of suggestions: An external holder for the fuel bottle. Unless you like your tools getting an oily sheen (some do, some don't) A set of ties so that you can strap your model to the face opposite the handle. |
RE: Custom Field Boxes
I have the very same thing. Pretty good deal for about $20 at Lowe's.

RE: Custom Field Boxes
Does anyone have any detailed pictures on how to create one of these or any info of what kind of hardware is installed and such? For $20 Imay just have to get one this weekend.

Speaking of which, I don't mean to get off topic here but I am just starting and all I have now is a Hobbico Nexstar and THAT'S IT. What do I need for field equipment as far as the basic necessities? Any brands that may be affordable for a beginner? Thanks for the help.

RE: Custom Field Boxes
There are actually two seperate compartments with a tray that can be lifted out of the top compartment. Just fit things in however you like. I love the wheels on it, sure makes it easier to move around.

RE: Custom Field Boxes
Go to a Dollar store or Dollar General or Roses(we still have one) and buy a $5-$7 tool kit that has 100 pcs in it, a razor knife, a $1 set of jewelers screwdrivers...several rags, wash clothes, a bottle of rubbing alcohol, a box of bandaids, glow driver wrench, spare glow plugs and props and some extra fuel line...maybe an extra servo or 2....if they are not in the tool kit then get a small cheap set of sae and metric allen wrenches, needle nose pliers and wire cutter pliers...I'm sure theres more, but I also keep 2 starters the battery and a quart of fuel in the top half so it gets pretty crowed in there.......Rog

RE: Custom Field Boxes
I did come across this, along with a Hangar 9 version which has fewer items included for about the same price.

I made this out of coroplast. Cheap, light, strong, chemical and water resistant. Battery and fuel pod separate from the main box, and attach to each other.

I keep trying to find something I like so in meantime I just use a cub food box with stuff in plastic bags and cary fuel sep in jug good for 3 or 4 years and a little duct tape and good to go , holds a lot and cheap and cost one buck- hate to say it but I been using the same box for over 3 years and holds alot ,Coffee thermos , Lunch and o yea all the sttufff I take to field and a couple jumpers to drop on top
One trip box 2nd trip jug of fuel and plane , drop off coffee and lunch in chair on way back to get plane , Life is good Yea Yea cooler and good refreshments are still in back of truck , for when flyin is done |

Made this a couple of years ago. Got tired of going back and forth to the truck to get stuff, but one drawback is that you can't be too wimpy when you carry it. Panel battery is under the power panel and put the glow fuel on opposite corner to help equal things out. Same way with the starter and cleaning stuff. The center is divided into three compartments; one for tools, one for misc. stuff, and one for field charger. Works for me.

RE: Custom Field Boxes
well i am not happy with the feild box i am going to add a few things to it tonight I am going to add a On and Off switch in front of the power panel and then a charge port infront of the switch so that i can shut all power off to the panel while the batt is chargin i am also going to make something else to hold the batt and field charger down will post more pics when done

Flick that and the box is dead. 'Just to avoid any unpleasant little methanol fires. I have a backlit Modutec LCD panel meter that gives battery volts as an analogue bargraph between 10V and 15V via an interface circuit and the gloplug current in the centre as a digital display in amps. I use my own design switch-mode glow ignitor and own-design constant current/ constant voltage battery charger. There's a 240V socket in the side of the box with a switch for charging input. It's OK, but just not big enough for carrying all the gear now that my slave boy (hubby) doesn't go flying anymore. 'Needs wheels! Carole Sherrington |
