I am into surface RC nitro vehicles, and have been looking into planes a bit. What is a trainer?

I don't mean to be rude, but you've got over 800 posts here. You know how this place works by now, do a search.

A trainer is an airplane you use to learn how to fly with...They are slower, easier to fly, and usually very simple. It makes learning go much faster...

See if you can find the local flying field in your area and take a trip out there. Then you can see them for yourself and see how it all works...Seems like once the car guys try airplanes, they NEVER go back! :)

Replace the Air Core with a decent trainer like the Sig LT-40, Avistar, Superstar, or the Eagle 2.

With any of the above airplanes, you won't need wheels, wheel collars, or a spinner.

Replace the engine with a Thunder Tiger Pro .46 (my choice) or an O.S. .46 FX... Change the prop to an 11x5 Master Airscrew and try two of those to start with...After learning, you can switch over to APC props.

The wood ones are just too dang fragile and will break just from trying to start them. They are not real efficient either and you will lose a lot fo power.

With a couple changes, you will have the perfect setup.

I can see your point BotleRocketWar, but we've been guilty of posting 'I agree', 'That's cool', 'Awesome plane', etc...or even me responding to this add. You should NEVER run out of questions, as if you do, then you should pack up and move on. Please don't take any offense, just my thoughts....

I see what you're saying...I guess I just saw it as asking what an engine is in the engines forum. I have always liked helping the guys that do some research on their own. dan1220 does seem like he knows more than most...I don't know what I'm getting at, so I'll quit... :)

I can vouch for the Alpha COMBO ... I've flown mine for about a month now with no real problems... Changed the glow plug, and after a small "misunderstanding" with the ground (see below), the prop....

1 piece of advice... GLUE THEM D@#* WINGS TOGETHER!!!

As stated above by botlerocketwar, I think my days as a car racer are numbered... My car stuff has less & less bench space every week.... :)

The Alpha trainer are nice and they are RTC. Another RTC if you want to jump in is the Hanger 9 Extra EZ 2. Please remember as a car guy, you will not be able to use your current Radio setup (unless you are on frequency 27 I think?). Also i learned that Air and car fuel are not the same (wanna buy a car? lol). Anyways, that all i got for pointers right now.

i would reccomend a pt-40. it is a bit more expensive but for good reason. the older ones were bulky and didn't fly well. the newer ones though fly really well, aren't too mushy at low speeds, and still survive crash landings. i have ruined about 8 nosewheels on that plane, and there is no sign of fateauge. one time, i forgot to change models and i had a vtail going between the aileron and elevator. not pretty. i ruined another nowewheel in a belly landing on the runway, not a scratch. they are armored like a battle tank, but sure don't fly like one

does the pt-40 only come in a kit? I kinda changed my mind about that part. I think for my first plane it should be an RTF or atleast an ARF

Yes Dan, the Spuerstar is a really great plane. But, the Alpha takes a lot of hits, it's a balsa plane just like any other, but for some unknown reason, it doesnt break. The Superstar is pretty much like the Avistar, and I have two of those. The avistar and Superstars have a tendency to break the tail a lot I dunno why. Once, my engine shut off on the Avistar, and I tried to turn it (I was a beginner back then), and it hit the ground nose down at a full 90 degrees, and the tail broke :D.The Superstar is pretty much the Avistar, the difference is one more inch of wingspan, and the Superstar has more dihedral on the wings. Between those two, the Superstar is more of a trainer than the Avistar, many say the Avistar's a 2nd airplane. Anyways, I really recommend you the Alpha combo. Besides, it's a little cheaper, plus u get the .45 Evolution engine, great engine. And don't buy that "no break-in needed" crap, always give it it's two full tanks of break-in. Other than that, have fun with flying. Again, I recommend the Alpha :P

it is an arf. rtfs are really expensive, and don't really help you learn the building skills you will undoubtedly face. arfs are great for starting to learn how these things work and how to fix them. arfs are like trainers for kits the way that trainers are trainers for harder planes.
