A 2-cell LiPoly. 370 motors will burn out quickly on 3-cell LiPolys, no matter what size prop you use. In this case, it's not the Amps, it's the RPMs. The motors weren't designed to handle that much voltage. We're pushing the limits on 8 NiCd cells as it is; the equivalent of 10 is just way overboard.

Have to stick with 2s lipo on a brushed motor or it won't last long.
You could use a much smaller prop but would lose the ability to fly the plane well or as intended.
A brushless motor like the Himax 2015/4100 would be perfect for this plane. My brother has one. Of course it's overpowered but that's what's fun about these foamy 3D's. Use a 12-6 GWS slowfly prop and a Castle Creations Phoenix 10 or 25 esc. Program it for 9 volt cutoff for 3s lipos and Soft Cutoff.
You will be amazed if you haven't seen these kinds of planes fly.

I agree with Foamaholic try brushless. I used a E-Flite 400 /4200kv with a Phoenix 25 controller and a Irate Li-po 1500 3 cell.
If you think the plane is overpowered with the Himax 2015-4100 you should see the E=Flite 400 brushless. Ihold the plane straight up give it full throttle and let go, almost unlimited vertical!!

Well we flew it today with the 3 cell and 9 x 4.7 GWs motor got warm but not hot and it will really fly at half or less throttle, also tried the 10X6 and done well also but very fast, don't get me wrong but we 5 extra motors thats really no good for anything else so we desided to burn them up LOL. The Tribute is a real dog on the 2 cells flys but that's about it, will try the 8cell NiMH tomorrow, just trying to find stuff for average JOE.
Thanks for your replys

Cool. Have fun. It's a very good flyer. It's designed to fly slow. It cruises around real nice.

Ran ammeter today on the stock setup with 9X4.7 slow fly gws prop full throttle only got to 5.8 amps flys real nice on this setup, don't know why they even put the 12X6 prop in the kit seems to be all wrong anyway we have tried it. Are there things I'm missing here? If so please let me know I am new to electrics but do have some experience with eletronics built my second radio from an Ace kit in the 80's.

Most everyone uses a 12-6 prop. This allows good hovering and vertical acceleration.

Understand so they really want you to buy the upgrade motor? Then the prop that they have in the kit will work? I just don't understand there reasoning for having a stock system that don't work, but we have yet to test with 8 cell NiMH.
Thanks
Steve

The instructions say to use a 2 cell pack. Doesn't make sense to me.
Sure it will fly, but you don't get good 3d performance with a 2 cell.
They also tell you for better performance to upgrade to brushless and 3 cell.
Seems they should have just sold the plane for less money and without the motor, but maybe they think people would only be interested in a complete package, and if they came with a brushless the price would be so high people wouldn't buy it?

Your exactly right sir!!!!! In fact it barely flys with the 2 cell. Just wish they would have option.

Right. Should be able to get the high performance version, especially since they sell the brushless motor that's perfect for it.
