measuring AMPS on brushless motor?
Hi guys,
I'm wondering how to measure the amps on brushless motors,
any help appreciated.
PS: This is my early speed 400 brushed Pylon racer called: "DYNAMITE",GREAT FUN!

A wattmeter such as the What's Up meter suggested by exeter is the best choice. However, if you have a multimeter, you can measure the current by inserting in one of the battery leads, as shown below.

between the battery and ESC...
but don't use your home multi-meter (unless you have a SERIOUS industrial one)
as a speed 400 brushless (obviously there are MANY factors involved) could pull over 35 amps......

However, pay attention to what exeter said. Your multimeter must be capable of handlng the current your system will draw. Your multimeter is probably limited to 10A. If your power system draws more than that, you must use a different method to measure current, such as the wattmeter exeter recommended.
If you are not absolutely sure of yourself, don't try the multimeter method. If you connect it incorrectly, you can damage the meter, the ESC, or both. If in doubt, get a wattmeter!

Check out this web site. shows you how to build a shunt that will work on your multimeter.
I built one with 12 AWG wire and works greats.

A shunt would be a good solution. If you don't wish to make your own shunt, [link=http://www.fmadirect.com/Detail.htm?item=2111§ion=57]FMA sells one for $12.95. [/link] This would let you use your multimeter to measure current up to 60 Amps.
