I have a kyosho dst and the pull start only goes out about 4 inches or so and stops and wont go any further so I cant start it what do i do?

Ok I pulled out the starter and it is a string that coils around a circular piece. Then there is this brass piece that goes into it and it connects to the motor. The string pulls freely until I stick it onto the motor and then it doesnt go anywhere. The brass piece hooks the string and the motor together and it doesnt want to go right but goes perfect left.... im so confused - its brand new
