just picked up an xray nt18 and was wondering if it was possible to port these little motors? and would it be very difficult? ive done a few 21 motors but nothing this small before. so will it work?

Yeah. I've done my .15 (TRX2.5R) with great results.

Yeah, the NT18 comes with a 0.8cc/0.05ci engine - 1/3 the size of the Traxxas 2.5. But technically, I would have said any engine could benefit from porting. Although I know for sure that neither my hand nor my eyesight are good enough to work on one that small!

If you've modified before then it shouldn't be too bad. Are you chaning timing or cutting fangs?

1/5 bigger? the 2.5 is a .15 cc motor, the x-ray is a .08 cc motor.

Correct. For some reason I was thinking the nt18 was a .18 engine. My bad.

I still thinks it can be done, it'll take a little more of a steady hand, but its possible.

Proper timing alterations are where your going to see the real gains.

Thanks for confirming JB. The Traxxas is 2.5cc which is 3 times the size of the 0.8cc NT18. In cubic inches, the Traxxas is 0.15 ci (a "15") which is 3 times the size of the 0.05 ci (a "5") NT18. That indeed makes the NT18 1/3 the size of the Traxxas 2.5.

Changing the timing is not something you want to do unless you plan on doing alot of trial and error on different motors/ sleeves and cranks. That is usually left to the professional engine modders. Basically you bore or grind out the intake and or exhaust ports in the sleeve and crank to achieve optimal timing. I don't know much about what timing is optimal... hard info to find. Most people that know what timing is best won't tell you what it is...

I'd just stick with the fangs in the sleeve and crank then slam some putty in it, bevel the crank intake and call it good if I were you.

There is no optimal timing for all engines. There all different.... You have to basically blue print the engine and look at what your working with as far as its current timing profiles, compression ratio etc... Then through experience you will know what port timing to alter and to what degree

I didn't mean for that post to sound like there was a "optimal timing"... I know it takes a lot of trial and error on each motor to get it right.... but I'm assuming you engine modders have a certain "range" in mind for modifying when it comes to untouched/new motors?
