im new to Nitro cars and new to this site.
just recieved a CT5 touring car as a gift and i have followed the break in procedure, what i need a quick lesson in, is tuning the low end and stuff.
heres the catch, i live in up state maine and the temps are a balmy 20 F degrees during the day, i am having trouble getting my car to stay running as soon as i pull the igniter off it stalls.
should i find someplace thats indoors to do this tuning procedure? am i wasting my time trying to get this car tuned in the middle of winter here in maine?
its running so rich there is unburned fuel dripping pretty fast out the exhaust. and its a chore to keep it running.
what should i do? i dont want to ruin this investment my wife made in this car.

to be honest if its that gold your probley hurting your rod you need to heat the motor up before you start it with a heat gun or a hair dryer and its ok to leave the glow igniter on till your motor gets warm .

i was able to run and tune with a full tank of gas tonight, everything was warm from being in the house too. but again as i pulled the igniter off it shut off that instant.
i even replaced the plug, i might wait untill the next warm day we have to do this. my igniter is new as well, and i charged it for a full 16 hours like it recommended, but i also ran 3 tanks with it on earlier today as well. it might be spent, i will charge it over night again and try in the morning.
thanks for hte info on heating i will think of a solution to make that happen as well, disadvantages of living in the breat north woods i guess.
will this be a hassle all winter? or should it stay running after i get a good tune on it and stuff?

after you get a fine tune on it you should be able to keep it running but when its cold i usually leave the glow igniter on for a few till it warms up. good luck if you need any other help let me know.

Rob. 20f is cold, but not cold enough to hurt anything imo. warming the motor deffinatly helps when starting in cold though. but i m gonna say your needles are a bit rich. mine was when new. turn your High Speed Needle, HSN ( screw in brass coller where the gas input hooks to, clockwise about 1/8th of a turn to LEAN it up a touch. counter-clockwise will Richen the mix. when you pull the ignitor, your getting more fuel than needed, and the fuel is cooling the glow plug and stalling your motor. you may need to do this a couple times. but i figure once or twice should get you running when you pull the ignitor.
theres a GREAT online guide on tuning, but i cant remember the site and have the lost the link i had. if i find it ill repost. the NX-15 is a gr8 motor imo. mines been working well for near 4 gallons.

What glow plugs are you using?
Ive found the OS#8s to be great for allsorts of conditions and engines.
Regards to the temperature - personally, I dont like to run when its cold out. Besides my fingers getting too cold, its sometimes tricky to get the engine up to temperature and running/restarting reliably. If this happens then the engine will suffer from accelerated wear. An onboard temp gauge will give you a rough idea of temps, not ultra accurate, but a ball park figure at least.

it still running pretty rich, i can get it to run without the igniter now, but its still spitting a bit of fuel at idle. there is a good shop in southern maine that im going to go to tomorrow. they offer tuning services. and i have a ton of questions i would like to ask them.
oh what about cleaning. will moisture hurt the car? im not talking about submerging it...im talking like Steam cleaning..we have a hand held steam cleaner, will this do damage to it? avoiding the electronics is the key im thinking,

how many tanks thru? if less than 4 to 6 tanks. let it spit a bit of fuel. i had to lean my needles up out of the box to get it to start it was so rich for my area. but after a tad needle play, it came right into it.
i ran 1 tank thru on a heat cycle method, and 2nd tank off the ground just giveing it up to 1/2 throatle and back to idle. 3rd - 5th tank i drove it around going to just over 1/2 throatle starting on the 3rd tank, to full wot runs by the end of the 5th tank. 6th tank was set for performance and then richened up a tad as i dont race it. through the whole process, i never let the motor get over 265*.
this includes 300 yrd wot runs and locking up the breaks and stopping it literaly at my feet, and getting a reading of 250-260 consistantly. this was also middle of July. im just getting done wth gallon 3 thru it. i cant say ENOUGH good things about my CT5. its been an ABSOLUTE dream to own.
