Default Engine assembly questions.

Ok so i've been tearing apart the engine to clean it all out to make sure no water has gotten in there at all. So i took it apart and first thing i see is theis little pin,( looking in from the pull start side hole) looks like it goes in the hole that connects the piston to the crankshaft and in that hole there is a little spring.

My question is...How the heck do they go back together? I put the spring in and then the pin but the spring just pushes the little pin back out? Whats the deal?

There is a slot in the backplate that the pin catches, this is what turns the crank shaft when using the pull start. Put the pin in gently and then try to line up the backplate. Do not use to much force when putting the pin in or it will fly out into the unknown. When you put the backplate back on ,pull on the pull start and see if the crank moves. If the pull start spins and the engine doesn't the then pin came loose. Kind of feels like the one way is slipping!
