question about engine on gst

hello i have had the gst 7.7 for a year now haven't ran it through the winter now i want to start it up again and its like much harder to start. i was wondering can i unmount the engine off the gst and mount it on a work bench and start it that way? it might be eaiser for me. has anyone tried to start the engine unmounted on the gst? i think it should work. let me know your opionions
thank you

I wouldn't pull it. Check that the fuel lines are not gummed up from old fuel or replace them. Check that the carb works freely, Pull the plug and clean or replace. Put a couple drops of AR oil in the bore and spin it. You should be good to go. I've had no probs with mine sitting .

i got new lines a new fuel filter new plugs i was going to check the one way bearing but i would have to take it off for that so i figuered while it was off mount it on a 2/4 bolt it to a work bench and then start it that way. either the the pull start or the roto starter the car is in my way.

No real reason on the OWB unless it's not working, but whatever trips your trigger. Starting it off the trk will be a hassell, fuel, exhaust, etc. Hard way to do something that's easy anyway .... your choice, not mine.

RE: question about engine on gst

actually i just got done with it. i charged up my glow plug and battery for the roto starter. i put a new plug in tried using that but no it i took it out and checked it and it didn't even light up. so i used an older one and it started right up. i got through half a tank of gas and then it started to rev up and rev down alot and then rev up and then just shut off. i tried to restart it and it didn't work so i put more fuel into the engine and it ran alittle while then the same thing happend and i coulnd't get it back started. maybe it got to hot. i mounted it on a 2x4 then put it on a work bench it actually worked out. just dont know why it was revving up and then shutting down. thats the problem i had in the summer time it would do that as i was running the truck. i think it is better to work on it this way cause when i would try and let the truck idel it would move foward little bit at a time and when it would rev high the truck would go outta control. so i am more confortible doing it like this. do you know why it would be revving up and down then shutting off?

I think you were getting the half tank lean. Search here for the thread ... ofna check valve ... doing the bench running can open new probs , as we can get lost on where you are exactly at as far as tune, etc. As far as I know ( and I may be wrong ) you need a load on the engine. If you are just sitting there on the bench with the motor free wheeling with the clutch bell, it is not the same as running the trk under load, as to check temps and tune. The only motors I ever ran on the bench were plane motors loaded with a prop !!

ok what new problems would occur? i will buy a check valve this week and put it on asap. the motor would do it when it was in side the truck also.

Here http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...4&I=LXEYG3&P=K Only needed for the Genesis and Nemesis trucks. To tune it , you need to drive it.

RE: question about engine on gst

no you shouldn`t need it for your ct5. it`s only for cars with big fuel tanks!(genesis 220cc, ct5 75cc)

hello that pic and link you sent to me shows me a fuel filter/primer. i have a fuel filter going from the tank to the carb. the pic you sent to me shows the fuel filter/primer from fuel tank to fuel exhust. tower hobbies info on the filter says it goes from the tank to the carb like i have it. also what is that number circle thing by the carb?

You are using it as a check valve only to hold pressure to the tank. get the one I show above. Here, read http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_6053163/tm.htm

ok i read up alot on that subject thank you i will order it from towerhobbies asap. you said that mounting the engine would create more problems then leaving it in the truck what other problems?the reason i want to also mount it out of the truck is that i want the engine to the point of that every time i want to use it it starts right up like my ct5 that was sitting for months and it started right up with like two pulls of the pull start. thats how i want my gst 7.7 to be.

RE: question about engine on gst

I just had my truck sitting for months and she started on the first few pulls. I have the check valve installed aready though. Before I put it in I could only run half a tank then my temps would hit 300 and I would shut the truck down, so I'm thinking it might be your LSN/pressure issue. I also use after run oil even if the truck is only sitting over night, always only through the carb with a few pulls to coat the engine after cool down. I don't see a problem with running the motor out of the truck, I also don't think it will help much since your not running under load so tuneing is out. The check valve is worth every penny IMO, thinking off putting one running to the carb also since I'm only useing a screen filter now.

RE: question about engine on gst

what is LSN? also why can't you just pinch the line? to keep the air from flowing out of the gas tank? isn't that what the check valve does?

Because you need air flow into the fuel tank to help fuel flow. Low Side Needle, if everything is clean, unbroken and moveing freely your needles might be off.

How much gas are you giveing it when you try to start the truck?

RE: question about engine on gst

oh ok so you mean it might not be tuned correctly? after the first couple of trys i dont give it gas at all just prime the engine then try to start it. after i tryu and start it for a couple of mins and nothing happening i check the glow plugmake sure it lights up put it back then prime the engine with alittle more fuel. i also play with the throttle alittle bit. i just had it running today for half a tank. the thing is also that sometimes it just stalls out and then it wont start again maybe the engine is to hot i don tknow but thats another thing thats a problem i use it maybe about half a tank then it stall and wont start up again. i will get the check valve.

Chris,

You, my boy, are suffering from the classic "Half Tank Leaning Issue" known to plague these larger tanks on an open fuel system. Get the OFNA Checkvalve, tune it and forget it!! Believe me, coming from a guy that knows this issue VERY well you will be much better off in the long run!!

i seen some other valves on ebay does it have to be the Ofna Aluminum Fuel Filter & Primer Pump? i seen some other ones on there but not that one? can i use a fuel filter or it has to be a filter/primer pump?
