Hi all. Im starting to build a Chip Hyde Dr. Jekyll. Im looking for a power plant for this model. Im more into 2 stroke engines instead of 4 strokes. But 2 strokes with rear exhaust ahve been hard to find for me. Suggestions are welcome about brand and size.

Christian,
If you can find one, a YS60RE would be my choice. But then again, they are as scarse as hen's teeth these days. A Rossi 61FIRE might be a good choice too.
Good luck with your hunting...........................

I checked with Jet and they have a 65 and a 76. Im not sure if a 90 would be to much. All three are available with rear exhaust and pricing is reasonable. Due to the size of the model I thought a 60 size would be a bit to small. YS had also a very powerfull 2 stroke but not easy to find anymore. Thanks for the comments.

Christian,
if its a Dr. Jeckyll and not a Jeckyll, it was sized and designed for 120 4 bangers. I'd plan on a good 90 2 stroke of that's the way you want to go. A Webra 90 or an OS 95 long stroke might do nicely. The Jeckyll, on the other hand, was flown by Chip with a Webra 60 LS in '91. LS 60's are not hard to source including YS 60 AR's (pumped) or even OS Hanno's (quite a bit rarer). You might find an OS 61 RF a little more easily.
I'm glad you find Jett pricing reasonable - they are about the most expensive engines out there other than YS 4 strokes!
Nice engines though.
What are the specs of your model (span, length).
David.

I'd look for a used OS 140RX (or even a new one). They are dinosaurs from the current pattern perspective (shocking... haha), but a great engine. It will fit nicely in the Dr. Jeckyll especially since it has the exposed pipe tunnel (might hang out a bit). You'll have lots of power with a reliable, easy to maintain 2-stroke. I'd still use a Hyde mount.
My 2 cents

Common sense would be to determine actual model. I will get the dimensions for you guys to help me out. Then we can decide on engine size.
Be back as soon as possible with dimensions.

This is Chip's actual #3 back-up for his 1991 World Championship win, originally built by Merle Hyde, just delivered by Dave Guerin. It is painted in exactly as Chip's was and will be powered by a Hanno Special and pipe.

If it is the 120 size, I would second the recommendation for the OS 140RX. I currently fly a BlackMagic V2, 2 meter plane and it is very reliable withmore than enough power for a 10.5 pound plane and theAMA patterns. Start it, don't even have to run it up, and take off. However, with theES carbon pipe, it takes a very long pipe tunnel. I had to extend the pipe tunnel on the black magic by 8". The proir owner had a YS 160 with pipe installed. Headers are available fromMacs. It runs very well inverted as well. Good luck.

I would third the recommendation for the OS 1.40RX!! I also have one in a Black Magic V-2 and it's an awesome powerplant...Throttle control is superb and the engine handles very, very well. I'm running the ES Composites CF pipe as well...A winning combination IMHO!!

Christian,
It's hard to tell without the dimensions, but by just looking at the pictures, the stab placement, and chin cowel, I think it looks like a sixty size Jekyll.
If it is a Dr. Jekyll, I can make you a package deal on a couple of OS 140rx's with header, Hatori/OS pipe, new spare EFI bearings, new spare ring, a new Mintor two plug head, a Hyde ARI mount and an new hard to find OS 70B Mixture control carb. One of the engines, pipe, header, and mount has less than twelve runs. Send me a PM if you are interested.

Guys have the final word. It is a Jekyll 60 as per the drawing attached. Neverthe less keep the forum open and your suggestions per the engine setup are welcome. I already started to work on the horizontal stab and elevators. Thank you for the help.
