Jeff, you are correct in that I missed that one. I had no intention of bidding on it and my theory was correct. I knew it would go for big bucks but $510 surprised me. Maybe I should unload a couple while the prices are so high.

wow that is an amazing price for a YS60FR... but I think that is a heli model, per the regulator screw

I have a side and a rear exhaust version that I might unload at those prices. Neither is NIB.

YS 60's seem to be going for much higher prices these days.

Major problem for the Ballistic Pattern Pilots in my opinion. I’m okay as far as YS 60 RE engines though, I just need a couple of SE’s.
As far as Auctions go they are completely unpredictable. It’s not about the worth it's all about the Want!
Did you see how much a tooth went for?

Darn!!! Got sniped again! No kidding, whats goin on. These engines are going sky high. I did manage to get a mint used OS 61 RF-P for $72 though... so that kind of makes up for it.

The price makes more sense to me now, after the OS Hanno thing. The YS 60 was the rock n roll engine, not to take away from the OS but the market confused me with regard to what these two engines were going for. I was picking up like new YS 60's in '06 for 80$.

Its really strange. Sometimes the OS pumped 61s will be up around $200 and Hannos well over $300, with the YS engines going less than $100. Then just a couple weeks later, it'll switch around. Just gotta look and look for those really good deals. Kinda fun though, almost like fishing for a big one.

Aurora,
You nailed it. I would be sitting at the computer mid morning and stuff would pop up. My best buys by far were made between the hours of 11am and 3 pm PST. Everybody is at work or just getting home. It seems to me that the market for these vintage engines is stabilizing; there will always be the straggler that unknowingly tosses up that nib you name it and the bid war begins. I also think it's interesting to glean info from, say, Flywilly and others that have used the OS. I had so many opportunities to buy when they were out there but for 2 bills I could score the YS. Wish I'd nailed at least one of the redheads.

Hi Guys,
the YS short stroke took a little while to catch on in the pattern community (in part, due to poor distribution), but when it did it was generally loved. IMHO it was the best short stroke 60 made: terrific power, durability and reliability - a bit tricky when things started going wrong as it was usually a leak in the fuel system, but attributed to other causes. It has a very flat torque curve which kept it competitive long after OS went to the 'long-stroke' engines. Turned a 12x9 prop just as effectively as an 11x7 - and were flown in international competition until at least 1989. When YS announced the release of their 61 longstroke engine (and the discontinuation of the FR/FS engines), many devoted YS 60FR users begged YS to reconsider. It ended up being a bit irrelevant as the YS 120 4-stroke soon became the dominant powerplant in pattern.
I have thought that all the YS 60s/61s have been undervalued for a while (to my benefit in a few cases
). As interest in 'CPA' type pattern ships grows, the demand for OOP rear exhaust 60s will continue to drive the price up. I hope there are enough to 'go around'.

I acquired a nib side .60 for these lower numbers we are talking about. A very nice rear exhaust was sold to me for about $70 about 4 yrs ago as well. I haven't seen anything like that in a while though. $400 - $500 seems to be the norm now for the nice ones.
